THE NORTHWESTERN FILE
The Eagles enter their first Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) contest of the 2016 season. The Eagles finished the 2015 season with 8-3 record, and ended with an appearance in the NCCAA Victory Bowl where they fell short to Southwest Assemblies of God University in a heartbreaking 10-7 loss. Under Coach Talley’s watch the last 16 seasons, the Eagles have had just one season in which they finished under the .500 mark.
A LOOK AT THE OPPONENT
Augsburg is coming off a season in which it finished 5-5 overall and 4-4 in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) play. The Auggies were picked to finish sixth in the MIAC Preseason Poll. Augsburg will have to replace four-year starting quarterback Ayrton Scott. Scott, who graduated as one of the top quarterback in MIAC history, set several school records during his playing career in Minneapolis.
FIRST-EVER MEETING September 8th, 1984 UNW 7, Augsburg 3 DOMINANT DEFENSE UNW’s eight-win season in 2015 was highlighted by the dominant performance from the defense. The Eagles, under the direction of Defensive Coordinator Matt Moore, led the country (Division III) in passing yards allowed and ranked fourth in total defense. PROTECTING THE HOME TURF Since opening the newly renovated Reynolds Field in 2014, the Eagles have compiled an impressive 9-1 tally on their home turf. In those 10 home contests, UNW has outscored its opponents 363-167. SATURDAY NIGHT LIGHTS The Eagles will open the 2016 season with three-straight games under the lights. UNW will head to St. Bonifacius for a showdown at Crown College next Saturday at 7 p.m., before hosting Minnesota Morris in the annual Football Frenzy contest the following week at 7 p.m.
IN THE POLLS After finishing runner-up in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) a season ago, UNW was tabbed to finish second in the league in last week’s UMAC Preseason Coaches’ Poll. The College of St. Scholastica was selected as the preseason favorite after putting together a perfect conference slate last fall. The Eagles and Saints will meet Oct. 15 in Duluth.
TALLEY LEADS TEAM USA UNW Head Coach Kirk Talley was given the honor of leading the Team USA Football team at the World University Championships this past May and June in Monterrey, Mexico. The team played against Japan, China, Guatemala and Mexico in the round-robin style championship format.
GOOD WORK, GREENER UNW senior linebacker Ben Greener was nominated for the 2016 America Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Good Works Team. The Eagles’ leading tackler in 2015 was one of 165 college football players nominated for the prestigious award that recognizes those committed to service and enriching the lives of others.
UP NEXT UNW will make the cross-town trip to St. Bonifacius next Saturday for a contest with Crown College. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. The Auggies will remain on the road, as they will head across the border to take on Concordia University-Wisconsin. Augsburg won’t play at home until Sept. 24. EAGLES UPDATE News & Notes From Northwestern Athletics The University of Northwestern volleyball team opens its 2016 campaign with the UNW Labor Day Tournament this weekend. In the eight-team tournament, UNW will host Coe College, Corcordia College, Westminster College, and Loras College. The Eagles finished their previous season with a 28-9 record and reached their first-ever NCAA Sweet Sixteen appearance. The UNW men’s and women’s cross country teams opened the season Thursday evening at the Crown College Early Bird Tri. The Eagles will next be in action when they head to UW-River Falls next Friday. The men’s and women’s golf teams teed off their seasons this past Thursday when they took on North Central University in a dual at the Gross National Golf Club in Minneapolis. Next up for the Eagles is the UMAC Preview Tournament in Alexandria. The UNW men and women’s soccer teams will both open their season on August 1st, as they each begin play with road contests. To follow, they will each host the first home contest on the season on August 7th against St. Thomas and Anoka-Ramsey. More information on all UNW athletics can be found by visiting www.unweagles.com or by following @unweagles on Twitter.
Notes from last year’s Northwestern Opener NORTHFIELD, Minn. – After pulling out a dramatic win last year, the University of Northwestern football team found itself on the wrong end of this year’s thriller with St. Olaf, dropping a 16-13 heartbreaker Saturday to the host Oles in the season opener for both schools. With neither team finding paydirt in the opening frame, the Eagles put together a 14-play 61-yard drive that chewed up nearly six minutes of time. Senior Grant Schoen (Independence, Minn. /Orono), who got his first start under center Saturday, capped things off with a two-yard touchdown run. The ensuing drive, the Eagle defense forced a three and out, allowing them an opportunity to add to its lead. UNW would score on its next drive, as David Rodriguez (Minneapolis, Minn./Washburn) recovered a BJ Foster (Charles City, Iowa/ Charles City) fumble in the end zone to give the visitors a 13-0
advantage. The Oles picked off a Schoen pass and returned it 23 yards for a score to trim UNW’s lead to 13-7. St. Olaf then converted a 35-yard field goal with three seconds remaining the first half to put the score at 13-10 heading into the break. In what turned out to be a defensive battle in the second half, the Oles capitalized after UNW blocked a field goal attempt and then fumbled the return to put up the only points of the final 30 minutes of play. Nate Penz, a regular at quarterback for the last three years, found Jorgen Salveson on a six-yard touchdown pass late in the game to put Olaf on top, 16-13. The Eagles then constructed a drive that allowed them a chance to even the score, but were unable to connect on the game-tying field goal and the Oles held on to win the contest.
HEAD COACH KIRK TALLEY 2016 represents Kirk Talley’s 16th season of leading the Northwestern football team. Under Talley’s watch, the Eagles won back-to-back Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) regular season championships in 2001 and 2002 with undefeated league records, a north division title in the UMAC in 2003, and two more outright conference titles with undefeated league records in 2005, 2007 and 2008. Coach Talley has been a head coach in the UMAC for 22 years, with his past coaching experiences involve current league members Crown College (Minn.) and Greenville College (Ill.) and former member Mount Senario (Wis.). While at Mount Senario, Talley’s team won the UMAC conference title and he was recognized as the coach of the year for his success. Other stints along his coaching career path include Taylor University (Ind.), Northern State University (S.D.), and Miami University (Ohio). After starting his collegiate football career as a player at Golden Valley Lutheran College, Talley played at Pacific Lutheran University for Frosty Westering, a member of the College Football Hall of Fame. Talley strives to see his program honor God through football as the gridiron provides his players with the opportunity to glorify God using the talents and abilities they have been blessed with both individually and corporately. Together with his wife Terri, Kirk is the father to two adult children, Brittni and Kristi.
