University Police Department
University Police Department Main Points • We are Problem Solvers and part of your student’s educational process
• We offer many non-traditional services – unlocks, jump starts, flat tires, escorts, etc. • We look for opportunities to interact with our students (ex. officers patrol residence halls) • Emergency 9-1-1 – Dispatched through New Hanover County; nonemergency number 910-962-2222 • 150+ call boxes and emergency phones – not just for emergencies • Initial point of contact for most campus services after hours
University Police Department Main Points • Most campus crimes are property crimes - crimes of opportunity that can be prevented • Bicycles drive our theft numbers plus we donate hundreds to charity each year – if they aren’t sure they’ll use it, don’t bring it • Very busy campus – we respond to over 16,000 calls in an academic year • Hurricanes – we are well practiced handling them – if NHC beaches order evacuation, UNCW will close and we will evacuate housing • Emergency Communications – multi-layered approach – person to person, web site, sirens, voice, email, text, social media – information will be pushed out; we will be busy, please don’t call in the early phases of an emergency to seek information
Key Take-Aways • Coming to UNCW is not a clean slate or medication vacation. Help your student to get connected to health and counseling resources before they start classes • Federal and state laws like FERPA, HIPAA, NC Mental Health Act, etc. will limit our ability to speak with you without your student’s consent • If your student is in a serious medical or safety emergency we WILL be in touch with you • Talk with your student to be sure Emergency Contact information is accurate and up-to-date
Key Take-Aways • Delayed Gratification is not a skill in this generation. We have timely appointments and services available, but they have to work with us • Encourage your student to be a Self Advocate and take responsibility
• Resist making the call to solve their problem or make appointments for them
Key Take-Aways • Let your student make mistakes so that they can learn – this may be hard for you
• Learning how to fail, negotiate resources, and recover is a key skill in adulthood • Provide emotional support and remember we are here to be their safety net
