Key Take-Aways • Coming to UNCW is not a clean slate or medication vacation. Help your student to get connected to health and counseling resources before they start classes • Federal and state laws like FERPA, HIPAA, NC Mental Health Act, etc. will limit our ability to speak with you without your student’s consent • If your student is in a serious medical or safety emergency we WILL be in touch with you • Talk with your student to be sure Emergency Contact information is accurate and up-to-date
Key Take-Aways • Delayed Gratification is not a skill in this generation. We have timely appointments and services available, but they have to work with us • Encourage your student to be a Self Advocate and take responsibility • Resist making the call to solve their problem or make appointments for them
Key Take-Aways • Let your student make mistakes so that they can learn – this may be hard for you • Learning how to fail, negotiate resources, and recover is a key skill in adulthood • Provide emotional support and remember we are here to be their safety net
