Shire Oak Academy Turning potential into excellence Shire Oak Academy’s Code of Conduct—Behaviour for Learning (BfL) Ofsted’s view of the conduct and behaviour of our students In our most recent Ofsted inspection (May 2010), the visiting inspectors were very impressed with the behaviour and conduct of Shire Oak’s students: The purposeful atmosphere for learning and good behaviour that is typical in lessons promote effective
learning.
Of course, we expect all our students to behave well and develop friendly and respectful relationships with their fellow students and with members of staff. The Ofsted inspectors considered our academy community to be harmonious and purposeful. We have a code of conduct which we operate. It is intended to be simple for all to follow. It is totally in keeping with our Behaviour for Learning Policy; in other words, it helps everyone to understand that good behaviour leads to effective and successful learning. We Respect Ourselves We dress smartly and appropriately for work We bring the correct equipment to enable us to work We are on time for everything and are ready for work We complete all of our work in class and at home to the best of our ability We behave how we want others to behave towards us We do not bring any illegal, offensive, dangerous or forbidden items into the academy
We Respect Others We are considerate towards others We are polite and courteous We allow others to learn We do not make other people’s lives more difficult We never verbally or physically abuse someone else We play an active and positive part in all aspects of academy life. We Respect Our Environment We put litter and waste in the bins provided We do not chew gum We do not eat in classrooms or in corridors We do not smoke We do not graffiti anything in the academy We use all areas of the academy for the purpose they are intended We do not enter or use areas that are out of bounds We move around the academy in a considerate manner Discipline and sanctions The academy reserves the right to apply appropriate sanctions for unacceptable behaviour or for any infringement of its rules or codes of conduct. Parents/carers are asked to note that all detentions are served at the end of the academy day. We operate a withdrawal unit, with students being entered into the unit for attempts to disrupt other students’ studies and for misdemeanours warranting more than a detention, but less than a fixed term exclusion. We also have a referral unit for misdemeanours warranting more than our withdrawal unit.

Shire Oak Academy Turning potential into excellence Shire Oak Academy’s Code of Conduct—Behaviour for Learning (BfL) It is very important to remember that academy rules apply whilst students are travelling to and from the academy. Whilst wearing the academy uniform, the good name of Shire Oak Academy is, of course, the responsibility of all our students. The academy therefore reserves the right to punish any bad behaviour which occurs during these times. In fact, any after hours’ misbehaviour, if reported, will also be investigated within the academy if this behaviour tarnishes our academy’s reputation. Accepted practice within our classrooms To ensure all students can achieve to the full, our code of conduct is adhered to. We expect all pupils to: arrive for all lessons on time; remove outdoor clothing upon entry to the classroom; sit in silence, wait for the lesson to start, get personal equipment ready; remain seated unless otherwise instructed; raise a hand to ask or answer a question; not shout out, eat, drink or chew in class (pupils may drink water in lessons, as long as it is contained in a clear plastic bottle); address staff as “Miss” or “Sir”; accept that, when the teacher is speaking, all pupils have a right to hear what is being said; remember the bell is the signal for the member of staff, not the students; follow the member of staff’s instructions at the end of the lesson carefully.
