GRAD 100/Introduction to Design Image and type manipulation Completed Size: 8 x 8 Final board size 12 x 12 Assigned: 6/27/2011 Completed and Due: 7/13/2011 Gestalt principles are an important part of design development. Some of the shapes and forms that we use in two-dimensional design have a sense of visual identity that is recognizable. These forms conjure conceptual, psychological, and visual associations that allow us to identify them by name. The study of this perceptual process began to explore the organizational strategies utilized by the eye to interact with form. They found the senses to be intelligent and able to organize information before it is actually processed by the brain. Psychologists also studied and documented the profound impact that culture, education, and learning environments have on the perception of visual elements. These explorations were categorized under the term Gestalt, roughly translated to mean “form” or “thing.” Their findings encompassed ideas of configuration, structure, and wholeness. We will focus on some of the principles of the Gestalt:

Similarity

The example above (containing 11 distinct objects) appears as as single unit because all of the shapes have similarity. Unity occurs because the triangular shapes at the bottom of the eagle symbol look similar to the shapes that form the sunburst.

Continuation Continuation occurs when the eye is compelled to move through one object and continue to another object.

Continuation occurs in the example above, because the viewer's eye will naturally follow a line or curve. The smooth flowing crossbar of the "H" leads the eye directly to the maple leaf.

Closure Closure occurs when an object is incomplete or a space is not completely enclosed. If enough of the shape is indicated, people perceive the whole by filling in the missing information.

Although the panda above is not complete, enough is present for the eye to complete the shape. When the viewer's perception completes a shape, closure occurs. ________________________________________________________________________ Objectives: This project will help you work with type and image and develop your understanding of the gestalt principles. Using your knowledge of space relationships, positive, negative space and line and space, please design a combination of letterform and shape. Your design should involve at least two of the three mentioned gestalt principles from above. Having the type and image interact in a way that creates interesting negative space along with continuation or similarity would be an example of your final design. The letterform you use can be from the word that defines the shape or that has similarity to the shape. So, investigate a good letterform that will support the image, and will be interesting. Also, you should be choosing an image that has an interesting exterior shape, without too many negative areas, so that you can use this to combine your image and letterform together. Grading: You will be graded on the final layout along with your graphic image development. Please don’t throw out your sketches I will be collecting them at the completion of your project. Your final presentation will require the piece to be mounted and presented on a 12 x 12 black board.

Any late project will result in immediate 5 point reduction. Grading Scale: A+/100, A/95, A-/92, B+/88, B/85, B-/82, C+/77, C/75, C-/72, F/0
