Super Senior Teams Carolyn Nichols

outhern California will be well represented on the nine U.S. teams that participate at the Super Senior International Team Championships, a Davis Cup/ Fed Cup-like competition, in Christchurch, New Zealand early in December of this year. Judy Louie, who was on last year’s Women’s 60 Marble Cup team that finished in fifth place, will again be a member of the group that will be looking for better results on the Christchurch hard courts. Suella Steel, who recently won her first national grass court singles title, defeating Charleen Hillebrand, will be on the Women’s 65 Godfree Cup team, along with Hillebrand, the captain, Cathie Anderson and Sinclair Bill, a former SoCal resident, who now calls Kauai, Hawaii her

T h e M e n’s 70 Suella Steel Crawford Cup team is practically all SoCal. Jim Nelson is the captain, and Gordon Davis and Bob Duesler are his teammates. Herm Ahlers, a long-time Dana Point resident, who now resides in Las Vegas, is also on the team. L ast year, the foursome won the Crawford Cup on clay in Antalya, Turkey. This time out, they will most likely play on grass. Doris deVries, formerly from NorCal, who is now based in Reno, will captain the Women’s 70 Gibson Cup team, another winner in 2006. Roz King and Dorothy Matthiessen, like deVries a member of last year’s champion squad, will join her for grass court play in Christchurch. For the third straight year, Graydon Nichols will be on the Men’s 80 Mulloy Cup team. He will serve as captain for the

Turkish Delight Mark Winters
T
his spring, two of the International Tennis Federation U.S. women’s cup teams were winners because of the roles played by Californians in matches at Antalya, Turkey. Robin Harris and Carolyn Nichols, teamed with Diane Fishburne and Susan Wright, to defeat Australia 3-0 in the Women’s 50 Bueno Cup final. Kathy Bennett Doss and Tina Karwasky, along with Kathy Barnes and Mary Ginnard, were responsible for the US defeating the Netherlands for the Women’s 55 Connolly Cup. “It wasn’t hard to believe that only two American teams won championships,” Karwasky said. “The European players are masters at playing on red clay.” She continued, “We had to play five matches. It was difficult enough putting the ball away on the surface, but add the fact that the balls were heavier than rocks and it is easy to see why things were difficult.” Fortunately, as Karwasky explained, “We had a great team. Everyone got along, and were so supportive of each other. I have played on a lot of teams and I can't remember one that has had as much fun together. Our strategy was simple – win, but have fun. We did a lot of laughing which loosened everyone up. Kathy (Barnes) did a great job being captain.” The spectacular setting helped. “The resort was right on the beach (and, at times,

it was quite windy),” Karwasky said “The people were really nice, and the food was terrific. There were almost 10 entrees every day in the dining room, and tons of fruits and vegetables. Everything was baked fresh daily (The bread was out of this world.). The desserts and pastries, for those with a sweet tooth, were too much.” The size of the resort created a special feeling. “There were over 50 courts so we had a chance to see the other teams play before or after our matches,” Karwasky said. “This gave us an opportunity to know our opponents well, and made the exchange of gifts, before we played each team, even more meaningful.” Though the Men’s 45 Dubler Cup team didn’t triumph, Mike Fedderly and Val Wilder,

two of the squad’s top performers, were successful in the Individual Championships following the first week of play. Wilder won his third singles title in the last four years, and partnered with Fedderly for the World doubles crown, a title that they have owned for some time. Mike Fedderly Karwasky concluded, “I, along with all the US players, had a great time. It was a wonderful experience. I can’t wait to go back. (But, next time, I’d like to spend a day shopping in Istanbul.)”

Because they are, there has been increased interest in local home and condo rentals during that period.” As is always the case with Solomon tournaments, the support is all-star cast strong. Beside Campbell’s and The Tennis Channel, BMW, Diadora and Hawaiian Airlines will do everything possible, as will the host facility, to make the championship memorable. ith the growing popularity of husband and wife competition across the country, it isn’t surprising that Steve Solomon, along with his wife, Abby, added another division to The Tennis Channel National Husband & Wife Senior and Super Senior Grass Court Championships. In the past, the tournament, presented by Campbell’s at Mission Hill Country Club, had merely Combo 100 and 120 divisions. Now, this coming March (the 10th -15th to be exact), there will also be a Combo 140 gold ball division. “There has been so much interest, and the Husband & Wife tournaments have been so successful, that adding a 140 division was an obvious move,” Solomon said. “This year’s draw had some outstanding teams, and we expect even more players to participate next year because of the addition of the new division.” He added, “The Tennis Channel National will again be held during the Pacific Life Open Masters Series. Super Senior Teams Carolyn Nichols

outhern California will be well represented on the nine U.S. teams that participate at the Super Senior International Team Championships, a Davis Cup/ Fed Cup-like competition, in Christchurch, New Zealand early in December of this year. Judy Louie, who was on last year’s Women’s 60 Marble Cup team that finished in fifth place, will again be a member of the group that will be looking for better results on the Christchurch hard courts. Suella Steel, who recently won her first national grass court singles title, defeating Charleen Hillebrand, will be on the Women’s 65 Godfree Cup team, along with Hillebrand, the captain, Cathie Anderson and Sinclair Bill, a former SoCal resident, who now calls Kauai, Hawaii her

Herm Ahlers, a long-time Dana Point resident, who now resides in Las Vegas, is also on the team. L ast year, the foursome won the Crawford Cup on clay in Antalya, Turkey. This time out, they will most likely play on grass. Doris deVries, formerly from NorCal, who is now based in Reno, will captain the Women’s 70 Gibson Cup team, another winner in 2006. T
his spring, two of the International Tennis Federation U.S. women’s cup teams were winners because of the roles played by Californians in matches at Antalya, Turkey. Robin Harris and Carolyn Nichols, teamed with Diane Fishburne and Susan Wright, to defeat Australia 3-0 in the Women’s 50 Bueno Cup final. Kathy Bennett Doss and Tina Karwasky, along with Kathy Barnes and Mary Ginnard, were responsible for the US defeating the Netherlands for the Women’s 55 Connolly Cup. “It wasn’t hard to believe that only two American teams won championships,” Karwasky said. “The European players are masters at playing on red clay.” She continued, “We had to play five matches. It was difficult enough putting the ball away on the surface, but add the fact that the balls were heavier than rocks and it is easy to see why things were difficult.” Fortunately, as Karwasky explained, “We had a great team. Everyone got along, and were so supportive of each other. I have played on a lot of teams and I can't remember one that has had as much fun together. Our strategy was simple – win, but have fun. We did a lot of laughing which loosened everyone up. Kathy (Barnes) did a great job being captain.” The spectacular setting helped. “The resort was right on the beach (and, at times,

it was quite windy),” Karwasky said “The people were really nice, and the food was terrific. There were almost 10 entrees every day in the dining room, and tons of fruits and vegetables. Everything was baked fresh daily (The bread was out of this world.). The desserts and pastries, for those with a sweet tooth, were too much.” The size of the resort created a special feeling. “There were over 50 courts so we had a chance to see the other teams play before or after our matches,” Karwasky said. “This gave us an opportunity to know our opponents well, and made the exchange of gifts, before we played each team, even more meaningful.” Though the Men’s 45 Dubler Cup team didn’t triumph, Mike Fedderly and Val Wilder,

two of the squad’s top performers, were successful in the Individual Championships following the first week of play. Wilder won his third singles title in the last four years, and partnered with Fedderly for the World doubles crown, a title that they have owned for some time. Mike Fedderly Karwasky concluded, “I, along with all the US players, had a great time. It was a wonderful experience. I can’t wait to go back. (But, next time, I’d like to spend a day shopping in Istanbul.)”

ith the growing popularity of husband and wife competition across the country, it isn’t surprising that Steve Solomon, along with his wife, Abby, added another division to The Tennis Channel National Husband & Wife Senior and Super Senior Grass Court Championships. In the past, the tournament, presented by Campbell’s at Mission Hill Country Club, had merely Combo 100 and 120 divisions. Now, this coming March (the 10th -15th to be exact), there will also be a Combo 140 gold ball division. “There has been so much interest, and the Husband & Wife tournaments have been so successful, that adding a 140 division was an obvious move,” Solomon said. “This year’s draw had some outstanding teams, and we expect even more players to participate next year because of the addition of the new division.” He added, “The Tennis Channel National will again be held during the Pacific Life Open Masters Series.
