ournament Director Steve Solomon, who always works with his wife, Abby, had to smile when asked about the Campbell’s National Men’s 60 & 90 Hard Court Championships played at Mission Hills Country Club. “The tournament was sensational this year,” he said, “It was the best field in any 60 national ever held. As an example, in the doubles quarters, 14 of the 16 players had won gold balls and the other two were silver winners. I believe that 15 or 16 were once ranked No. 1.”
Spectators had to bundle up in the morning.
Howard Moffett and Steve Solomon Claude De Montgolfier, Federico Barboza, Alex Swetka and Tony Coker
Brian Cheney and Hugh Thomson
Brian Cheney raced past Hugh Thomson 6-1, 6-0 in the Men’s 60 final. He kept his engine revving, teaming with Charlie Hoeveler, last year’s singles winner, to slip past the 2006 doubles champions, Jimmy Parker/Ken Robinson 4-6, 6-4, 6-1. “Brian was great, winning both singles and doubles,” Solomon said. “He is the Director of Tennis at The Village Racquet & Health Club in Phoenix. The club’s owner,
Bennett Dorrance, is a member of the Campbell’s board, the tournament’s major sponsor. Talk about a coincidence.” New to the 90s division this year, Alex Swetka played like a youth, dispatching twotime finalist Federico Barboza of Argentina 6-2, 6-1, for singles honors. Duplicating Cheney’s “win both” success, Swetka paired with Tony Coker, to defeat Barboza/Claude (continued on next page)

“There were 78 competitors in the 60s and the biggest field ever in the 90s. Overall, there were 305 gold balls among the players at the tournament.” (continued from previous page)
De Montgolfier of France 6-4, 6-1, in the doubles final. In addition to the USTA awards, the singles and doubles winners received tickets from Hawaiian Airlines. Finalists picked up three-day stays in Las Vegas, complements of the new Fairfield Grand Hotel. There is always an interesting sidelight at Solomon run tournaments. This time a match in the 60s created attention. “Cheney and Parker have won 52 and 88 gold balls, respectively, between them,” Solomon noted. “Both have been No. 1 in the U.S. many times. Prior to the tournament, they had played 14 times in their career and were tied 7-7. The last time was in 1971, but neither remembered who won. This time, Cheney earned a 7-6, 7-6 victory.” Solomon continued, “There were 78 competitors in the 60s and the biggest field ever in the 90s. Overall, there were 305 gold balls among the players at the tournament.” Added Abby Solomon, “It was an amazing total, yet it falls short of DoDo Cheney’s, (Brian’s mother), record. She has won a gold ball for every day of the year except Christmas (364).” A number of players had outstanding showings. “Art Santilli was a finalist in the 60 Consolation. With 37 of the 39 eligible players entering, it was as strong, if not stronger, than many other senior tournaments. The 90s was no exception. Swetka had a tough match with John Morrison of Northern California, who was forced to retire with an injury after they split the first two sets. Howard Moffett had an outstanding tournament, losing in the semis to Barbosa.” The weather was challenging at times, but not completely daunting. “We overcame rain on Monday; big wind on Wednesday and some late afternoon rain on Thursday that forced us to resume the doubles semifinals on Friday morning before the singles,” Solomon said. “The dinner/dance was held outdoors overlooking the famous 18th hole of the Dinah Shore golf course. Overall, the event was spectacular.”

T
he weekend prior to the Campbell’s National Men’s 60 & 90 Hard Court Championships, the Palm Springs Tennis Club and Spenser's five-star restaurant, again hosted the Lurie World Cup. The competition is a one-of-a-kind international team match, involving the top Men’s 90 players from the U.S. and around the world. Members of the U.S. team included: Irv Boris, Anthony Coker, Irv Converse, Doug Crary, Gardner Gray, Bill Lurie, Bob Mix, John Morrison, Bob Newman, Barrett Scalet Norm Stoll and Alex Swetka. On the International side were: Federico Barbosa of Argentina; George Barta and Dan Hadelek of Canada; Jim Talman of England; Claude De Montgolfier of France (who always plays in green socks); Howard Moffett of Korea; Raul Fernandez of Mexico and Tracy Strong of Switzerland. The U.S. was crushingly successful in the first day’s singles going up 7-1. Day Two the Internationalists rebounded taking three of the four doubles. The final score was 8-4 for the home team. Tournament Director Steve Solomon said, “The players and their guests had a fabulous luncheon at Spenser’s after the doubles on Sunday. The day ended with ringing applause for Lurie, who founded the event and offers suppor t annually, making it a great Howard Moffett, Claude De Montgolfier, Bill Lurie and Alex Swetka success.”

rior to the tournament, The Tennis Channel National Husband & Wife Senior, and Super Senior Grass Court Championships, presented by Campbells at Mission Hills Country Club, had been touted as a “not to be missed”competition. As things turned out, the event, played on the same courts used in last year’s Davis Cup between the USA and Chile, it was exactly that.

Ann and Andrew Stanley picked up a walkover Combo 100 triumph when David and Janet Bryant were unable to play because David injured his back. In Combo 120 play, Mas and Susan Kimball defeated Karol and Robert Beverley 6-4, 6-3. California was well represented in the Consolations. Karen and Steve Haas claimed the Consolation 100, 6-0, 3-3 Retired, over Barbara and Mike Vaughn, when a leg injury forced Barbara to the sidelines. In the tournament’s most exciting final, Celia and Jess Torres edged Marlene and Frank Webster 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 in the Consolation 120 final. praised; as were the Diadora tournament shirt and a custom hat presented to the participants. Another Solomon plus were round trip tickets to Hawaii from Hawaiian Air Lines, winners received. Finalists earned threeday visits to the Fairfield Grand Resort, in Las Vegas. The Solomons also donated $1,000 to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation for research, and matched up to $1,500 in contributions made during the tournament. “As good as the inaugural tournament was last year, this one was even better,” Steve Solomon said. “The only disappointment was that we lost at least five very competitive teams because the National Women’s Clay Court Championships, in Houston, switched dates to the same week. Otherwise the play was fantastic, and with the Pacific Life Open taking place at the same time, those in the tournament got a chance to see a lot of good tennis because complementary tickets to the day matches were provided.”
