SOUTHERN UTAH UNIVERSITY THUNDERBIRDS Last Time Out The T-Birds moved to 2-1 last weekend when they upset the No. 18/21 Panthers of Northern Iowa. The game was very tight down the stretch, but with 1:50 to play in the contest SUU freshman kicker Manny Berz knocked home his fourth career field goal to put the Thunderbirds up by three. Freshman cornerback Jalen Russell picked off UNI quarterback Eli Dunne on the final play of the game to seal the deal for the Thunderbirds. SUU’s Patrick Tyler threw for 200 yards and a touchdown in the contest, rushing for an additional 45 yards. James Felila took 21 carries on Saturday for 92 yards and broke into the end zone twice. Chinedu Ahanonu led the team with 12 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss and a sack. As a team the Thunderbird defense had 12 tackles for loss on the evening and held the Panthers to negative rushing yards.
Big Sky At A Glance No Big Sky teams made it through their 2017 non-conference slate unscathed, but there were a number of impressive performances from the various teams in the league. Southern Utah, Idaho State, Montana, UC Davis and Weber State are all sitting at 2-1 entering conference play. Idaho State reached 2-1 this weekend by knocking off FBS opponent Nevada. Three Big Sky teams appeared in both Top 25 polls this week, with No. 11/11 Eastern Washington, No. 17/19 North Dakota and No. 18/23 Weber State all among the top the FCS has to offer. Southern Utah came in No. 26 in the Coaches Poll and No. 30 in the STATS FCS Poll.
2016 Conference Campaign In head coach Demario Warren’s first year at the helm of the Thunderbird football program they finished 5-3 in the Big Sky. The Thunderbirds opened Big Sky play with a huge win over Portland State to set the tone. After falling to Montana on their first conference road trip of the year, SUU returned home to knock off UC Davis 24-3.

SOUTHERN UTAH UNIVERSITY THUNDERBIRDS After a two game slide the Thunderbirds closed out Big Sky play on a three-game conference winning streak, knocking off Idaho State (52-27), Montana State (38-21) and Northern Arizona. (48-21). The Thunderbirds are a combined 12-4 in the last two seasons against foes from the Big Sky Conference.
Words From Coach Warren On what impressed him most about the win after some time to reflect….. “We just battled,” he said. “We didn’t play great the whole game as a team and we just overcame everything that happened to us. We turned the ball over four times, three times deep in our own territory and the defense didn’t blink all night. Special teams came up big in the end of the game and it was just a resilient effort, we’re really proud of the guys to be able to fight in a close game and pull one out. I don’t think we’ve been able to do that in the last couple of years, and I feel like we can win in a lot of different ways now, so hopefully that gives us some confidence in those tight ball games.” On what he’s most looking forward to entering his second Big Sky season….. “It’s another opportunity,” he said. “We didn’t get what we wanted to get accomplished last year and now we’re starting all over. There’s a lot of excitement going into Sacramento, going to go play a quality team that’s been playing well lately and it’ll be a good opportunity for us to go 1-0. It’s exciting that it’s here, and we all know where we were picked at and I think we have a real opportunity to prove people wrong.” On what has impressed him about the Hornets on film….. “They’ve got speed everywhere,” he said. “Speed at receiver, speed at running back, speed on defense, there’s just a lot of talent on the field so it will be a big challenge for us to keep up with their speed.”
Opponent Preview: No. 18/21 Northern Iowa The Hornets will be hosting their third game in a row when the Thunderbirds head to Sacramento on Saturday. Overall, the Hornets are 1-2 this season with a victory over Incarnate Word and losses to Idaho and Weber State in a non-conference matchup.

DEMARIO WARREN COACHING HISTORY SUU | 2008-13............................ Defensive Backs Coach SUU | 2014-15............................. Defensive Coordinator SUU | 2016-Present......................................Head Coach
Demario Warren finished his first season as the Southern Utah University football head coach, concluding the 2016 campaign with a 6-5 winning record. Warren led the Thunderbirds to first-time match-ups with both the University of Utah and Brigham Young University. Under his first season at the helm of the program, SUU’s 6-5 record, along with 2015’s 8-4 record, marks the first time the Thunderbird program has finished with back-toback winning seasons with at least 6+ Division I wins. At the reins of the team, coach Warren built a program that created an electric atmosphere in Eccles Coliseum, which included a record-breaking 10,306 attendance in SUU’s match-up against Portland State and a season record-breaking average attendance of 8,658. Under Warren’s direction, Southern Utah football finished first in the Big Sky Conference in both interceptions, with 20 on the season, along with punting, as Big Sky All Conference First Team punter Tate Lewis finished the season averaging 45.4 yards per punt. The Thunderbirds also led the conference in kickoff coverage, allowing a conference low 355 return yards and a conference high of 40 touchbacks. SUU’s kickoff net average was almost two yards higher than the next team’s at 44.8. The team also finished second in the BSC in turnover margin. SUU director of Athletics Jason Butikofer announced the hiring of head coach Warren on January 11, 2016. Warren took seat atop the Thunderbird program after spending time serving as the defensive coordinator of the Thunderbirds. Warren has spent the past nine seasons with Southern Utah University. Before his head coach position, Warren spent two years as the defensive coordinator for one of the top defensive units in the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS). During his tenure, coach Warren developed three current NFL players in first-team All-American, James Cowser, Miles Killebrew, LeShaun Sims and Dion Turner. Warren has had 19 All-Conference performers in nine years, including nine out of eleven defensive players earning All Big-Sky honors during the 2015 Big Sky Championship season. In 2015, the Thunderbirds’ defense led the nation in turnover margin. “My family and I are extremely excited for the opportunity to lead this special program. We are so grateful to Jason Butikofer, President Scott Wyatt and Eric Leavitt for choosing me to succeed my mentor and friend, Ed Lamb. I would like to thank everyone for their support throughout this process. I look forward to growing and expanding the relationships with the Cedar City, alumni and the campus community.” In 2012 Coach Warren’s young unit, which included a handful of true and redshirt freshmen, averaged 1.1 interceptions per game, the third-best average in the Big Sky Conference. Redshirt freshman LeShaun Sims averaged 0.33 picks per game, which ranked 37th in the country, and Tommy Collet, Jr., also had three interceptions last year. SUU finished with a dozen interceptions in 2012, the team’s higest total since 2001. One of Warren’s players, redshirt freshman safety Miles Killebrew also earned honorable mention all-BSC honors and he was on the Jerry Rice Award watch list as well. In 2011 SUU’s secondary was particularly effective against the pass, as the Thunderbirds allowed just 178.18 yards per game through the air - the 19th best mark in the country - and SUU ranked 28th in pass efficiency defense with a 115.67 rating. Warren saw two members of his secondary, cornerback Dion Turner and safety Erron Vonner, earn first-team all-Great West Conference honors and Turner went on to sign a free agent deal with the Green Bay Packers. SUU’s defense was among the nation’s best overall in 2010, ranking 21st against the run and 22nd overall at the end of the regular season. It was one of the most improved defenses in the nation last year. Coach Warren headed up a secondary in 2010 which featured three first-team all-Great West Conference performers, cornerbacks Colin Pretlow and Dion turner and safety Erron Vonner. It was Pretlow’s fourth straight first-team honor, Vonner’s first, following an honorable mention appearance in 2009, and Turner’s first. In 2009, under coach Warren’s tutelage, Pretlow and safety Akeem Anifowoshe were both named first-team all-GWC for the second straight season, but Anifowoshe moved to linebacker in 2010, where he earned his third consecutive all-conference honor. After joining the Thunderbirds initially as a running backs coach, Warren made the shift to the defensive side during 2008 spring ball. During that season, along with Pretlow and Aniofowoshe earning all-GWC honors, another SUU defensive back, DeWayne Lewis, signed a free agent NFL contract with the Jacksonville Jaguars and he is currently playing with Team USA. Coach Warren came to SUU from UC Davis, where he was a three-year letterman at running back before injuries cut short his career during his senior season. Coach Warren earned a starting spot with the Aggies in 2005 as a redshirt freshman when he finished second on the team in rushing. A native of Fairfield, Calif., Warren prepped at Fairfield High School, where he was a four-sport letterman. Coach Warren earned his bachelor’s degree in African-American studies from UC Davis and has gone on to earn his Master’s of Business Administration degree. Coach Warren and his wife, Amanda, are the parents of three children; Demario, Jr., Jazelle and Daylee.
