MINISTERIO DE INDUSTRIA, TURISMO Y COMERCIO DIVISIÓN DE INFORMACIÓN, DOCUMENTACIÓN Y PUBLICACIONES N.I.P.O.: 701-07-014-3

As laid down by Royal Decree 1554/2004 of 25 June the Instituto de Estudios Turísticos (Tourism Studies Institute) is the body responsible for research into the factors impinging on tourism and the drawing up, compilation and assessment of statistics relating thereto and the distribution of this information. It is a dependent body of the Tourism General Secretariat of the State Secretariat of Tourism and Trade of the Ministry of Industry, Tourism and Trade. The Institute´s research work concentrates on the economic and demographic aspects of tourism. To do so it taps into the statistical information generated by the three main surveys it develops and runs: The Spanish Domestic and Outbound Tourism Survey (Familitur), The Spanish Indound Tourism Survey (Frontur) and The Tourism Expenditure Survey (Egatur). The overall system of tourism statistics in Spain is made up by the statistics brought out by the Instituto de Estudios Turísticos, the Instituto Nacional de Estadística (National Statistics Institute) and other bodies of a national and regional character. The United Nations Statistics Commitee defines tourism as “The activities of persons travelling to and staying in places outside their usual environment for not more than one consecutive year for leisure, business and other purposes”. It distinguishes between: Domestic tourism: the tourism of resident visitors travelling within the economic territory of a gien country. Indound tourism: the tourism of non-resident visitors travelling within the economic territory of a given country. Outbound tourism: the tourism of resident visitors travelling ouside the economic territory of a given country. For statistical purposes all tourism-related travellers are called “visitors” and are broken down into the following two main categories: Tourists: Visitors who stay at least one night in collective or private accommodation in the place visited. Same-day visitors: Visitors who do not spend the night in collective or private accommodation in the place visited These categories can be combined in different ways depending on whether the visitor is international, national or regional.
