SPE Flow Assurance Technical Section Chairman’s Message! Welcome to the SPE Flow Assurance Technical Section! The purpose of the Flow Assurance Technical section is to further the objectives of SPE in the free discussion of matters relating to flow assurance, to establish consensus on industry best practices, and to promote these practices widely. In other words, we want to provide a forum to help flow assurance and related discipline engineers. We have just successfully completed first year as the SPE Flow Assurance Technical Section (FTS) under the founding leadership of Prof. Dendy Sloan (Colorado School of Mines) and Dr. Jeff Creek (Chevron). The inaugural FTS leadership team has worked together well this past year and it is an honor for me, which is bestowed upon by the founding leaders, to lead into its second year. FTS had held first elections to the committee this year in January 2015 under the nominating committee comprised of Dr. Dendy Sloan (CSM), Dr. Doreen Chin (Shell) and Mr. James Pappas (RPSEA). I would like to take this opportunity to welcome our first elected committee members Hassan Karimi (Schlumberger), Carolyn Koh (CSM) and Trevor Hill (BP) and thank outgoing committee members Hariprasad Subramani (Chevron) and Greg Hatton (Shell) for their valuable input, suggestions and efforts in sailing us successfully through first year. I would also like to specially thank OneSubsea, Ansys and Schlumberger for sponsoring 2014 luncheons. The 2015 officers of the FTS section are: Chair: Phaneendra Kondapi, Granherne-KBR First Vice Chair: Steve Cochran, Chevron ETC Second Vice Chair: Hassan Karimi, Schlumberger (Elected) Secretary: Carolyn Koh, Colorado School of Mines (Elected) Treasurer: John Nighswander, Schlumberger Technical Moderator: Taras Makogon, ConocoPhillips Director: Cem Sarica, University of Tulsa Director: Scott Bufton, Universal Pegasus Director: Trevor Hill, BP (Elected) Past Chair: Jeff Creek, Chevron ETC Flow assurance is a key enabler and multi-discipline activity across all functions of oil and gas field development and production. With fluctuating oil prices and unpredictable production issues it’s time for every oil and gas engineer to understand why and how to engage flow assurance at every stage starting with the early phase to ensure uninterrupted transportation of reservoir fluid from pore to process facilities in a safe and effective manner. SPE has more than 140,000 members worldwide and at
least 40-50% of the members are directly or indirectly involved with flow assurance and related disciplines. Our goal for this year is to engage more and more SPE members and non-members closely with FTS activities and collaborate with other technical sections to share knowledge across disciplines. How FTS Can Help You This Year? Some of the FTS activities planned for 2015 are: 1. The section and website to serve as a point of connection and discussion 2. Two flow assurance sessions (panel and paper) at the 2015 ATCE in Houston 3. Regular monthly lunch meetings in Houston 4. Professional networking opportunities 5. Expert global webinars on interesting topics 6. 2015 SPE Flow Assurance Forum, “Flow Assurance: The Future State of the Art” How You Can Help FTS? We welcome your ideas about how we can help you.
