Friday 17th October 2014 Dear Parents, It’s been another busy week at school with two theatre workshops taking place. All the children watched a play yesterday called ‘Sticks and Stones’ to raise the children’s awareness about bullying and suggested strategies for dealing with bullying situations. Teachers will follow up this up with discussions, and written work through RE, English and PHSE. The Yr6 children participated today in the Young Shakespeare Workshops focusing on ‘Macbeth’. Class 4 visited Mitsubishi focusing on how children can make our environment more sustainable. Congratulations to our Chaplaincy Team; who were commissioned during mass last Sunday alongside the team from St John Fisher. Their role is to be caring and supportive of their fellow pupils and to set a good example of a follower of Jesus in their schools. Our new Chaplaincy team can be now seen around our school proudly wearing their special chaplaincy ties! Governors’ Fund contributions: Our Governors would like to thank the parents who have donated so far to the Governors Fund and would like to encourage all parents to contribute whatever amount, large or small. Please be assured that it will be spent wisely and for the benefit of all our children for example some of this money was used to install a new boiler and re-furbish the Yr5&6 boy’s toilets. Please send in your donations to the Governors’ Fund, full details are published on our school website under ‘Home-Governors’. Parent/Teacher Consultations took place this week: it was great that so many parents were able to meet with their child’s class teacher. It is very important that we work together for the benefit of your child. If you were unable to make an appointment, with your child’s class teacher at a mutually convenient time. Sports Updates: Cross Country- Well done to all our Cross Country team who participated in the race yesterday held at Garden Fields School. Congratulations to Luis Odegaard-Davis in Yr6 who came 1st in the boys’ race. Boys’ Football- Our football team was narrowly defeated 1-0 against Garden Fields School yesterday. Great team-work was displayed and so keep it up boys! Netball Club-The netball club need some extra coaches to help train our young players. If you are able to help with our sessions on Thursdays between 3.20- 4.30 p.m. please let me know via the school office. PTA News: Remember it’s ‘Wacky Hair’ day next Friday 24th October. All children should come to school sporting a wacky creation and £1 donation. We kindly ask no colour dyes to be applied to your child’s hair. The latest PTA newsletter is attached.

Spanish Day- Wednesday 22nd October: Parents and friends please join us for a welcome assembly at 9- 9.30am with Spanish nibbles at our Spanish Café and enjoy a Flamenco presentation at 2.45 - 3.15pm.We hope that all children will dress in Spanish themed clothes, you may like to use Spanish flag as inspiration (red and yellow), or print or draw a copy of the Spanish flag and attach it to a plain t-shirt. No football shirts please. The school would be grateful for any Spanish themed items e.g. flags, castanets etc. by Monday 20th October. Please make sure that your child’s name is clearly marked. There is a food tasting workshop after assembly and we ask children with allergies to bring a snack to enjoy as many of the food items may contain traces of allergens. There will be no achievement assembly on the 22nd; however, there are two Spanish themed assemblies one at 9-9.30 am and another including a Flamenco display at 2.45 -3.15pm that you are welcome to attend. Coats:-Autumn is definitely here and the children will need to bring their coats/ waterproofs into school as we encourage the children to play outside whatever the weather. Please ensure that all items of uniform are clearly labelled with your child’s name.

Message from Fr. Charles We are blessed in this Parish with very good schools and it is encouraging that so many of you want a Catholic education for your children. It is great to meet you, the parents, when you come to get the school admission forms signed and to see that you are a committed and practising family. It is very easy, and indeed a joy, to sign for many of you that I know from meeting at Mass and at other Church functions. A very real problem that we the priests here face is that we do not recognise some parents that come to have forms signed. This is maybe due to the fact that we have missed meeting some of you. To overcome this, I would like to encourage you to make yourselves known to us at Church. It is very difficult for us the priests, and I think unfair, to be asked to sign a form that states that a family is a practising family, when we do not know them. To all you mothers and fathers that make such a great effort to support and bring your children to Church on a regular basis I say thank you and assure you of our continued support and admiration for your commitment.

Deadline approaching for Secondary School applications: All applications for secondary school should be made online at www.hertsdirect.org/admissions by 31st October 2015. Please feel free to come and speak to myself, Mrs Jeffery or your child’s class teacher if you have any queries about the process. It is essential that you apply on time, as late applications will not be considered in the first round of applications. Loreto and Nicholas Breakspear also require a priest known to the family to complete a form to be returned to them by the deadline of the 31st October. Please note that Father Charles will be available to sign forms for secondary transfer on Friday 17th October from 4.006.00p.m., Saturday 18th October from 9.00-10.00a.m.and on Saturday 25th October from 9.30-11.00 a.m. Hope you have a great weekend. Yours sincerely
