Dear Parents and Carers, As I am sure you are aware, the start to 2017 has been very busy in school with the children producing fantastic learning. We are very proud by the excellent outcomes being produced by children and the progress they are making. Already the school has continued on our development journey and we continue to move forwards. We are really focused on reading, including insuring children are developing their reading for pleasure; your support in this is much appreciated. Regards, Mr Adam Lowing Head Teacher
As you know our start to the school day can begin from 8:30am, children should be in school at 8:45 and have to be at 8:55. Visitors to our school always comment on how calm and purposeful the school is first thing in the morning and we appreciate your ongoing support. We do urge for parents to try and bring children in school for as close to 8:30 as possible. Every minute a child arrives in school earlier helps them with their green pen learning and a chance to reflect and move forwards. Please help your child by getting to school as early as possible so they can learn more.
On Friday 20th January the school had another visit from Jo Johnson, MP for Orpington, along with Councillor Chris Pierce and Sergeant Baker. The police and both local and national government are keen to work together with the school to keep supporting our local community. We are proud to continue to work in partnership to keep making SMCPA the best it can be. Jo Johnson is a supporter of the school and recently wrote to us saying "I am delighted to learn of the continued fantastic progress being made by the school. The improvements have been truly remarkable and my congratulations to for a terrific set of results for your current Year 6 cohort (25% offered grammar school places). The role that St Mary Cray Primary Academy has taken on within the Cray Valley community is extremely notable and positive.”

Caterpillar Class visited the Natural History Museum in London to learn all about dinosaurs and experience being a scientist! The children became scientists and investigated the different fossils and objects from the museum. After lunch the class visited the dinosaurs where they learnt facts and how to pronounce their names. The adults and children in Caterpillars Class would like to thank all of the parents who helped on trip.
Parents, Would you like to get more involved at your children's school? A vacancy has just come up to volunteer for a Parent Governor on the Local Committee (formerly called Governing Body) of SMCPA. The Local Committee is responsible for providing both support and challenge for the Head Teacher and the Senior Leadership. We do this by meeting as a full Local Committee with the SLT at least four times a year, attending training, and attending events and other meetings at school. We review a variety of information about the school, such as the school's development plan, parent, pupil and staff surveys, school policies and procedures, attendance, teaching and learning outcomes and various provisions such as pupil premium, PE, SMSC and PHS. We expect that all Local Committee members will attend all four LC Meetings, one training session per year as well as at least one activity/meeting per term. If you have this sort of time free, or can work flexibly and are interested in learning more about the school, supporting the SLT in this way can be fulfilling as well as knowing that you have helped to make SMCPA a better school. If you would like to put your name forward or are interested in further information, please contact me on
[email protected]. Kind regards, Julie Covill Local Committee Chair Page 3

As you know, we are part of The Spring Partnership Trust, which includes five other schools working together. In the last few weeks the schools have been working very closely to help benefit all the children in terms of sharing best practice and ideas. For our community this should give further confidence that our school has support to allow it to reach the high aspirations and standards we set for ourselves.
A huge congratulations are due to Lacey McGuire who has been chosen to train with the Crystal Palace Diving Team! Lacey was talent spotted in school and then invited to take part in the talent testing programme which she passed with flying colours. She was officially asked to the join the training programme last week. Lacey should be very proud of her achievements in gaining a training place, as the talent spotters see thousands of students from all South London Schools. We wish her all the best as she starts her training.
On Friday 24th February we are going to have members of the project team behind River Cray Corridor Community Project: ReCrayation. We are looking forward to working on outcomes during the course of the day and then sharing with parents at home time. Please do come into classrooms at the end of the day to learn more.
Please do follow all that is going on in school by visiting Twitter and our feed: @stmarycraypa. To confirm you don’t have to be a member of Twitter (or have an account) to search the school and see some of the exciting learning and achievement taking place.

Clearly at school we use time to provide children with the richest learning we possibly can. You will have noticed a change in home learning this year which has been explained in previous newsletters. This has been done in part to allow children and families time to focus on reading at home. The difference between a child reading for fifteen minutes with support at home compared to a child who never reads can make the difference of up to four years in terms of overall achievement in all subjects by the end of secondary school. Despite what might be thought, research shows that continuing this activity up until the age of fourteen has massive benefits to a child. Please don’t stop reading when they are able to decode, there is a lot of comprehension development to come. The reason we ask for children to read to parents daily is simple. We want the very best for your children and we know this has huge impact on their development. Please support your children by doing this and giving them the very best life chances for their futures.
Thank to you all parents and carers who are working so hard each week to help their children to learn their times tables. Learning tables is so important as they lay the foundations for so much of the mathematical skills and concepts that the children learn as they travel through their school life. Children with a good times tables knowledge are more confident when learning new mathematical concepts and therefore enjoy the subject more! Just to remind you of the expectations for learning tables: Year 1 – counting in 2s, 5s and 10s Year 2 – recall and use multiplication and division facts for the 2, 5 and 10 multiplication tables, Year 3 – count from 0 in multiples of 4, 8, 50 and 100; recall and use multiplication and division facts for the 3, 4 and 8 multiplication tables Year 4 – count in multiples of 6, 7, 9, 25 and 1000; recall multiplication and division facts for multiplication tables up to 12 × 12 Year 5 – identify multiples and factors Year 6 – all of the above!! Therefore, you can see that the expectation is that all children will be able to recall multiplication and division facts for all of the times tables up to 12 x 12 by the end of year 4.There are lots of really good times tables songs and games online but please come and speak to me if you would like more advice on helping your child at home. Mrs Haig

On Friday 13th January we all woke up to a light dusting of snow! However, we are made of strong stuff here in St Mary Cray and so it was business as usual! Mr Roe and Mr Lowing had been working hard since 6am to clear the paths and walkways so that parents could access our site with buggies and pushchairs. At 8.30am there was the usual throng of happy faces ready to come into school and at assembly time the children were even happier to see Spike had arrived in school to celebrate the children’s effort with their attendance that day. 10 lucky winners received an extra special prize from Spike who had come to school armed with more prizes. All of those who made the journey to school that day, either alone or with support from friends and staff alike, received an authorised attendance mark that day even if they were a little late – so thank you to all of those who braved the cold! It is likely that there may be another day or two of this weather before we see the first signs of Spring, so I would like to take this opportunity to remind parents and carers that St Mary Cray Primary has a long tradition of staying open during the snow. It is extremely unlikely that the school would be closed due to weather conditions so please remember that EVERY SCHOOL DAY COUNTS! Spike will be back at other times during the term for more surprise prize draws!
Every Monday we celebrate attendance in assembly with certificates and prizes. Every week there is a school draw to win a £5 gift card of the winner’s choice for being in school 100% on time. Our most recent winners were:
Armani in year 5 Luke in year 5
In addition to this, every child in the school puts their name into another draw box every day when they arrive to school on time. This means that the more times your child comes in on time, the more chance they have to win. This draw is to win a family cinema ticket to the Odeon cinema to see a film of your choice and is valid up to the value of £30. Our first winner was Poppy in year 2, well done to her and her family! This draw takes place every half term in addition to the other prizes on offer and is to reward the whole family for continued effort in good attendance and supporting your children with their learning. We look forward to rewarding more of you in 2 weeks time!
