A NOTE FROM OUR RECTOR
Dear Friends,
This Sunday we will celebrate a major feast of the church, the Feast of the Transfiguration. I've always been drawn to the Transfiguration, and I keep a Transfiguration icon in my study. The imagery is so powerful—the prophets of old appear with Jesus, Jesus shines so that his disciples can barely look at him, and a thick, mysterious cloud envelops them all.
Perhaps we've all felt those sorts of moments—Transfigurations. Moments of beauty and power. Moments where it feels like we can just reach out and touch the glory of God. Those are wonderful times, and we should give thanks for them.
But they aren't the normal way that life goes. Much of life isn't lived on the mountain, in the cloud, seeing the brightness of God's glory. Most of life is lived in the valley, in the ordinary and even mundane.
This Sunday, we'll be thinking together about what all that means—that we long for the mountain but are so often down in the valley. I hope you'll join us.
God bless, Fr. Quinn+
PARISH NEWS
Our New Bishop The Bishop-Elect of the Diocese of East Tennessee is the Rev. Brian Cole, rector, Good Shepherd, Lexington, Kentucky, Diocese of Lexington. As the cathedral bells rang out through downtown Knoxville following his election, the Bishop-Elect sent this message: "With an open heart, I am both excited and humbled to be chosen by the lay and clergy delegates of the Episcopal Diocese of East Tennessee to serve as your 5th bishop. Susan and I look forward to joining with you all in practicing resurrection, in the apostolic work of revealing the Living Christ to a beautiful but broken world. We will be happy to see you as soon as we put down roots in Knoxville later in the year." The Bishop will be ordained and consecrated on December 2, 2017, at Church of the Ascension, Knoxville. He will be the 5th bishop of the Episcopal Church in East Tennessee. St. Peter's Work Day: Saturday, August 5 You are invited to bring your gardening tools, drills, pressure washers, etc., and get ready to spruce up the Church and School before the students embark on a
new and exciting school year. A light breakfast will be available and School parents will receive double volunteer hours. It's a great time to meet new families and reacquaint with older ones! Saturday, August 5, 8:00 am until noon.
Change to ROTA Because of Rally Day, there will be only one service on Sunday, August 20, at 10:00 am. This change is not reflected in the ROTA that appears in your August newsletter. I apologize for any confusion. Those who are scheduled to participate in the 11:00 am service are asked to minister at the 10:00 am service instead. Please call the church office if you have a conflict and a substitute will be arranged.
News from CREATE The members of CREATE wish to thank everyone who donated to the July school supply drive. Rest assured that all of your generous donations will be delivered to students in need prior to the beginning of the new school year. Thanks to the generosity of St. Peter’s parishioners, CREATE recently donated $100 to Chattanooga Room in the Inn for the purchase of children’s tutoring supplies. During the month of August, CREATE requests donations of cotton underwear and white socks for Adult men and women. Please leave your donations on the bench inside the Bracewell Room.
Safeguarding God’s Children
Matt Harbison will lead a training session for “Safeguarding God’s Children” on Thursday, August 10, 12:00 pm to 3:00 pm in the Bracewell Room. It is recommended that church ministry leaders and other volunteers attend this training at least every 3 years. To register, contact the school or church office.
Education for Ministry (EfM) EfM is a fantastic opportunity to learn about the Bible, church history, and Christian theology all in the context of a prayerful, intentional community. If that sounds interesting to you please be in touch with Fr. Quinn for information about the program and possibilities for a group at St. Peter's.
Request for Transportation A young man has requested a ride to St. Peter’s on Sunday mornings. He lives on East 16th Street downtown. For more information, call the Parish Administrator at 423-877-2428.
Sunday Noon Fellowship This Summer In thanksgiving for all our faithful Fellowship volunteers who provide refreshments so generously during the year, the Vestry will host the Sunday noon Fellowship all summer. Coffee, lemonade, and cookies will be provided in the Bracewell Room after the 11:00 am service. A Message from the Flower Guild Just a reminder that many Sundays are still available this year if you would like to dedicate flowers for the altar in memory of a deceased loved one, in celebration
of a special event, or in thanksgiving for a friend or family member. Check the poster in the Bracewell Room for openings. You may pick up a flower donation form in the church office or contact the Parish Administrator by phone or email. Please specify the date you prefer and whether you would like specific flowers or colors represented. The minimum donation is $35. Make checks payable to St. Peter’s Church and drop in the offering plate, bring by the church office, or mail.
Episcopal Churchmen Conference The 71st Annual Laymen's Conference sponsored by the Episcopal Churchmen of Tennessee will be held August 18-20, 2017, at the Dubose Conference Center in Monteagle, TN. Flyers for the conference are located in the foyer of the church. Registration can be made on line at Episcopal Churchmen of Tennessee (http://tnchurchmen.org). This is a great time for fellowship with fellow laymen from the Diocese of East Tennessee, Tennessee, and West Tennessee—lots of good food, activities, speakers, prayer, and just being on the mountain. Question? Contact Chip Stansbury or John Trieber.
