Maraka 12-26 Oct
First Day 2014 Tues 28th Jan
Dear Parents and Caregivers, Maraka spirit is certainly in the air at St Peter’s Catholic School! The theme of ‘Let’s Rock’ has been taken to another level thanks to the creativity, enthusiasm and hard work of Jenna Davies, Marcelle Grube and the rest of the staff and families of our school. I have been fortunate enough to experience events similar to Maraka while working in different schools, the biggest being the Mount Isa Mardi Gras that is held every year. These events are always excellent opportunities for the school community to come together to celebrate what is fantastic about the school. However, what is incredible about St Peter’s is that these events not only attract families of enrolled students, but also past students and friends of the school. Our Maraka float would not be possible without the input of Des and Brad Mizzi, who have created a jaw-dropping medley of famous rock n’ roll guitar riffs that will be one of the features of our float. Brad in particular has tinkered away for weeks perfecting this for St Peter’s, adding in his own drums and bass as well. A former school captain, Brad exemplifies the love and dedication all of our students have for our school. In addition, Dajna McMurray has worked extensively on prop design for us, giving up large portions of her weekend to achieve this. You will need to see what she has created to believe it! Dajna is another past student whose family is an integral part of our school history. She is an outstanding example to her brother and sister, Blaze and Cadey, who both share Dajna’s love and enthusiasm for St Peter’s. With the addition of our three new students this term and on the eve of our Prep Orientation, which begins Monday, the St Peter’s family is stronger than ever. I would like to thank all of you for the contribution you have made, big or small, to making our school the inclusive and welcoming environment that it is. I spent part of last week attending the Principal’s Meeting in Townsville alongside my fellow principals from around the diocese. The meeting featured an interesting presentation on the dangers of children and social media. Susan McLean, a former police officer, discussed the issues of having underage children accessing social media and thus potentially endangering themselves. Websites such as Facebook, Tumblr and Instagram have terms and conditions that specify people must be 13 years of age to sign up for an account. I have included some useful resources for parents to have a look over this week regarding where to go for more information on cyber safety and potential risk factors for children who access social media. I was fortunate also to observe some of the incredible ways ICT is incorporated into some of our Townsville schools. In Week 5, Sarsha Keast and I will both be attending professional development in Townsville related to using ICT in schools and classrooms and are looking forward to discovering new ways St Peter’s students can access the curriculum. Some notes for the week ahead: MARAKA SATURDAY St Peter’s will meet at JMax in Ingham at 8am on Saturday 26th October to prepare the float. We are hoping that families can donate some of their time to help our team put the float together. JMax is situated on Lynn Street, directly behind J&B Marine. Following this, St Peter’s will meet on Gedge St (just down from JMax) at 4:30pm to prepare for the parade. It is important that children are punctual, as the parade begins at 5:00pm. If you have any further questions, please contact the office. Another reminder note will be sent home tomorrow. DATE CHANGES Unfortunately, due to sporting events and some other issues we have had to change a few dates. The most important of which is our end of year Mass and awards night. Please note that this is now the 2nd of December (Monday of the final week of school) from 6pm. I encourage you to refer to the ‘What’s On’ attached with this newsletter to ensure you are fully informed about upcoming events at St Peter’s. JUNIOR EXCURSION Our Junior excursion to JCU in Townsville is almost upon us. On Wednesday, our Juniors will attend the Toy Expo alongside their friends from Canossa School. Please ensure students are at school before 8:30am and bring their lunch money in a sealed zip lock bag/envelope. ALL SOULS MASS SATURDAY 2nd NOVEMBER Please join our parish community in celebrating All Souls day on the 2nd of November at 6pm. I have been so proud of the attendance rate St Peter’s children have maintained this year with our special Masses and am looking forward to seeing you all there. This week, I had another new parent visit inquiring about St Peter’s for their children. They had not approached us previously as they felt there was no way they could afford to send their children to our school. It was a member of our school community that actually had a conversation with them about our school fees – to which they were pleasantly surprised. I remain incredibly grateful to all of you who continue to ‘spread the word’ about our brilliant school. Together We Grow… Have a safe week, see you at Mass. Johnathon Greer Principal

CRAZY SOCK DAY THURSDAY 31st OCTOBER Next Thursday we are holding a Crazy Sock Day to raise funds for the Catholic Missions. St Peter’s is preparing to ‘sock it’ to global poverty and help in the development of new churches around the world. As part of our Crazy Sock Day, students are encouraged to wear free dress (sunsafe clothing) and be creative with the way they wear their socks on the day! Students are asked to bring a gold coin donation that the school can pass onto the Catholic Missions. Also on the day, we will be having ‘sponge the teacher’ where our teachers will bravely risk becoming quite wet to raise funds for the Missions. For 50 cents, students will be able to have three throws at our teachers – so start your throwing practise now!
Carly and Hannah are ready to ‘sock it’ to poverty next Thursday!
Some idea of where our money will be going is outlined below. To make your own donation or learn more about the Missions, please visit www.catholicmissions.org.au.

Tomorrow we celebrate World Teacher’s Day with a whole school assembly at 8:30am. I would like to extend an invitation to all families to attend. In a small school such as ours, effective teachers are of the greatest importance. We are blessed to have two young, energetic and exceptionally hard working young ladies on our teaching staff this year who routinely set the standard for organisation, inspiration and dedication. Miss Keast, a former pupil and school captain, has such a genuine and admirable love for the school community. Having a former student in a position of leadership is a luxury not many schools have. I know all of our students admire her positivity, her drive and her endless compassion for all members of our community. In all of my years in schools, I have never met such an accomplished, polished and professional graduate teacher as I have in Sarsha. Mrs Davies’ flair, energy and humour are things that have enabled her to form such special bonds with all of her students at St Peter’s. To the children in the Senior room, Mrs Davies is more than a teacher – she is someone they admire and someone who inspires them to be the best they can. I have greatly appreciated her guidance and assistance throughout the year as I have transitioned into St Peter’s and am so grateful that she continues to give 100% to her class, each and every day. Sometimes the greatest gift that we can give our teachers is a simple ‘thank you’. All too often, we can find ourselves taking for granted to special things that people do for us and our children. I encourage you and your children to join me in saying a giant ‘thank you’ to all of our teaching staff at St Peter’s Catholic School. Together, we make a pretty amazing team. Together, we grow. Internet Safety Tips for Teachers, Parents and Carers:• All internet enabled devices (iPad, phone, iPod, Xbox)SHOULD be in a common area of the house NOT IN THE BEDROOM! Need an alarm - buy a clock radio! • Parental monitoring is vital – walk past and see what your child is doing, who they are talking to and what sites they are on....be aware if their mood changes. This is NOT invading their privacy at all...it is parenting in the digital space • Make sure there is no response to rude or harassing comments. (keep a record in case of further investigation) • Advise your student/child to immediately exit any site that makes them feel uncomfortable or worried. Basic protective behaviour principles apply. • If harassment continues….the current accounts can be deleted and a new one started. The new account details should only be given to a selected few. • If receiving harassing messages on social media - have the sender blocked & report to the site. • If you have found inappropriate content about your child or one in your care on a website or are informed about this situation please contact the ISP and or Police or advise the parent to do so a.s.a.p. • Have a family internet contract and set house rules about what information your child can put onto websites or share with others, where they go online and what they do. You (adult) need to be in charge. • Be aware the majority of children WILL NOT tell a parent/teacher if bullied or harassed online for fear that they will loose internet access!! NEVER threaten total disconnection! • Make sure that your children understand that they will not get in trouble if they tell you about a problem. • Parents must learn about the internet with their child – get students to share their knowledge of the internet with their parents in a fun environment • Spend time online with children, just as you would with many other activities such as sport, board games and walking the dog - learn and explore together • Install filters and other monitoring/blocking software to minimise dangers. This is already done in schools but homes should have up to date filtering software installed at home. • Know the sites they are accessing to ensure suitability. Filters CAN sometimes fail to protect and can be bypassed by a ‘tech savvy’ child. • Learn the lingo so that you can decipher some of the content if required. Advise parents to do the same. • ABSOLUTELY NO EXCHANGE OF PERSONAL INFORMATION! • Children Under 13 ARE NOT ALLOWED on Facbook, Instagram, Kik, SnapChat, iTunes and many more. Don’t support your child to break the rules & they won't be the only one without these accounts. Learn to say NO! • Social Networking Profiles MUST BE SET TO PRIVATE. Use all the security settings available to make the site as safe as possible. • Social networking site friends should be people that your child knows in real life. This is one way to reduce possible risks. Anyone can be anyone online. • Teach children that information on the internet is not always reliable. • Very close supervision for young children is recommended. There should be a limit to the number of people kids talk to online and the parent/carer should know who they are too. approved. • Whatever your children use, you must use as well. Set up accounts on the same sites to ensure that they are suitable and the interactions appropriate. Engage with them online. This also allows you to know how these applications work. • If your child is playing online games it is YOUR responsibility to make sure that YOU know how to play the game too in case of problems. Play online games together. • Do not let young children ‘google’ aimlessly with no supervision. Children need to be taught about search engines and how they work. • The internet and the various applications are a lot of fun and a wonderful tool……maximize the benefits and surf safely together! Please note that this list is by no means exhaustive and that there is no guarantee that adherence to these tips will provide 100% protection or safety for those using the various applications of the internet.
