Dear Parents and Caregivers, Welcome back to St Peter’s Catholic School for Term 4. I hope you and your children had a relaxing and enjoyable break. The first day back at school is always exciting as all of our staff hear many stories and recounts from the adventures of our students over the holidays. It is excellent that they return to school so happy and enthusiastic to share this with us all. This week, we welcomed Orli-Jade and Tahlia Handley back into the St Peter’s family. Both girls were a much loved part of our school in 2012 before work opportunities saw the family move south. It was quite the surprise for our students, most of whom had no idea the girls were coming back. I am regretful that I did not have a camera ready to show you Cadey McMurray and Nelly Tyson when the girls walked into the room! We are always happy to have past students visit and we are certainly blessed that the girls are back with St Peter’s again. It goes to show that there really is no place like home. In addition to the Handley girls, we also welcomed Ethan Kerr this week into our Year 7 (which just seems to keep growing!). Mrs Davies was very excited to welcome another new student, now bringing the Senior class to 16 students! Mrs Davies reminded me that this is the biggest it has ever been in her time here. It is interesting to me that each new child we have enrolled here at St Peter’s seems to ‘fit in’ so effortlessly. I used to think about how amazingly lucky we were to be attracting all these great people, but I’ve come to realise something after spending almost a year with St Peter’s – it is not so much that great people are coming to our school, but that our school brings out the greatness in its people. This is a credit to you all, especially our students, who love, share and welcome every new face that walks through our gates. I remain the proudest principal in Halifax! Term 4 is nothing short of action packed – we have so many things happening this term that a paragraph here simply wouldn’t do them justice! I have included in this week’s newsletter a ‘What’s On’ for the term that I will ensure remains in each issue. This will help families keep track of upcoming events and stay prepared. The highlight I am sure will be our end of term Mass on the 28th of November, which will see the graduation of our incredible Year 7 students. Many of them have been with us from the very beginning and this term marks the start of a very special, emotional and spiritual time for them as they round out their primary education in style. Some notes for the week ahead: SWIMMING LESSONS START TOMORROW (FRIDAY) It is important that children are fully organised and have their swimmers, towel, goggles and sun safe shirt to wear in the pool. Please remember that boys are not to swim without their shirts during swimming lessons. Spare ‘essentials’ are always a great idea also. Thank you to Mrs Dale Lancini who has kindly donated her time to be one of our coaches again this year. WORKING BEE THIS SUNDAY FROM 9AM After Mass, we love for families to stay with us and lend a hand on a few odd jobs around the school. The main focus will be on constructing resources for Maraka, which is coming along nicely. We will also be constructing our new cubby house and putting together a sand pit. See you there! PREP ORIENTATION STARTS SOON! Mark the 28th of October in your calendars – we have a record number of Pre-Preps scheduled to visit our school on these days. Many young families have heard about the atmosphere and supportive lifestyle that we have at our school, which comes from your example and word of mouth. Naturally, you’ll be able to follow all of the fun on our social media. LEADERSHIP – NET TEAM Our Year 5 and 6 students will soon be invited to prepare speeches for captaincy positions this term. For 2014 we will have one school captain position and two sports captain positions. These are important roles, especially in a small school, and require maturity, leadership and a serious commitment. The NET team have kindly agreed to host a leadership morning with our students, alongside those from Canossa, on Friday 15th November to speak with students about what it means to be a leader in a Catholic school. Once dates are finalised, all families will be invited to attend speeches around Week 5. SENIOR CLASS TEACHING POSITION As we are now in Term 4, we will soon be advertising for teachers to express interest in teaching at St Peter’s in the Senior class. For 2014, our current plan is to have Miss Sarsha Keast working exclusively as the Junior school teacher while our new placement will teach the Senior class with me. This is a placement that I take very seriously and I am dedicated towards ensuring that our next teacher is enthusiastic, hardworking and, most importantly, is excited about working at St Peter’s. I encourage all families to regularly check newsletters, reminders and our social media so that you remain informed throughout the term. I am looking forward to an exciting and memorable term, we plan on ending this year with a bang! Have a safe week, see you at Mass. Johnathon Greer Principal

Next Wednesday 16th Oct is School Officers Day This day is to celebrate the great work our school officers do behind the scenes, just to let them know we appreciate everything they do. We are going to have a shared morning tea next Wednesday morning to show them our appreciation. If you would like to send something along to share that would be fantastic. 2

Sacramental Program I am excited to announce that Shaun Rossington and Kaileb Balanzategui will begin preparation for the Sacrament of Reconcilation this Tuesday at St Peter’s. We know and love Shaun who is always very enthusiastic and academic in Religious Education sessions. We are happy to welcome Kaileb back into our St Peter’s family as he prepares for this truly special occasion. Reconciliation will take place on the 13th of November at St Peter’s Parish from 7pm. I am looking forward to all of St Peter’s joining me to support both of our friends on this evening. Mrs Chesson/Amy Aquilini Please continue to keep Mrs Chesson and her niece, Amy Aquilini, in your prayers and thoughts. While the road to recovery is long, Amy is slowly improving and I know Mrs Chesson has greatly appreciated the love and support our community continues to show her. We pray that her spirit remains strong and she makes a complete recovery. Prayers at home Did you know that our students know several prayers that they can say before meals? I encourage you share a moment of prayer with your children before dinnertime – it is a great opportunity to experience this. We often focus in the morning on prayers of thanksgiving, identifying what God has given us and how grateful we are for this. Fr Chris spoke to us today about having a grateful heart and the importance of saying thank you. Let us not forget the power those two little words have. St Peter’s Makes a Difference If you recall in Term 3 we had a visit from Quinta, who directs the Hinchinbrook Community Support Centre in Ingham. Our captains and school pledged to assist Quinta with her Christmas fundraiser this year in providing toys for children who otherwise would receive nothing on Christmas Day. Our children’s committee will meet in the coming week to discuss an action plan, stay tuned!

Cornflake, sultana and cranberry biscuits

Lower Herbert Kindergarten ‘Open Day’ Wednesday 16th October 9.00am—10.30am Everyone Welcome (Argaet Street Halifax)

Now taking enrolments for 2014. Limited spaces available.

Ph. 47 777 320

1 cup crushed cornflakes 1/4 cup quick cooking oats 1/4 cup plain flour 1/4 cup dried cranberries 1/4 cup sultanas 1/2 tsp cinnamon powder 1/2 tsp baking powder 1/4 cup vegetable oil or melted butter (personally, I always cook with butter – I can’t give it up!) A pinch of salt 1 tbsp honey 1 tbsp plain yoghurt You’ll also need: Oven Flat biscuit tray Oil to lightly grease Baking paper (optional) A mixing bowl Something to melt the butter in (if you’re using it) Wire cooling rack Preheat oven to 180°C and lightly grease a biscuit tray (I also add baking paper, but you don’t have to). Dry roast the oats for a a few minutes and leave to cool. Crush cornflakes and add to the oats. Add salt, cinnamon powder, baking powder, flour, cranberries and sultanas and mix well. Melt the butter (or just measure out our oil) and pour into the dry mixture. Stir all the ingredients thoroughly. Add the honey and stir well. Now slowly add the yogurt until the mix binds together. You probably won’t need the full tablespoon. Form small balls from the mix – around 2cm round – place on the baking tray and flatten them with the back of a spoon.

4

Put the biscuits into the oven for around 15-20 minutes or until they turn golden brown on top. Leave on the tray for around 5 minutes before turning out onto a wire rack to cool completely. The biscuits will become crisp on the outside after cooling. They’ll stay nice and gooey on the inside.
