STEM VENN DIAGRAM STEM: Science, Technology, Engineering & Math

GRADE LEVELS Grades 3–6 TIMEFRAME 30-60 minutes ACADEMIC AND SOCIAL GOALS Students will: • Practice their research skills as they explore comic book STEM themes to determine their viability (possibility) • Practice their oral language and listening skills as they share with others and come to a consensus • Practice cooperation and teamwork as they complete and present their projects MATERIALS NEEDED • Comic books • Poster boards with markers • Venn diagram sample CLASS CONFIGURATION • Sitting at tables INSTRUCTOR PREPARATION • Print the Venn diagram sample and post it where all can see. CLASS PREPARATION • Share and post the meaning of the acronym STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Math). • Briefly discuss that many comic books fall into the category of “Science Fiction,” including many STEM themes that may be factual (possible/viable) or fictional (impossible/not viable) or a combination of factual & fictional (possible & impossible/viable & not viable). • Share Venn diagram sample and one example for each category described above. STEPS 1. Divide students into small groups. In a container have slips of paper, with each containing one of the words: Science, Technology, Engineering, or Math. Have each student draw out a slip of paper and then walk around to find students with the other terms needed to spell STEM. Each team should have one student with each word. 2. Hand out comic books and poster supplies. 3. Have groups find STEM themes in the comic books and discuss whether or not they are factual (possible/viable), fictional (impossible/not viable), or a combination of these. 4. Remind students that there are no right or wrong answers. They are to come to a consensus as a team as to their opinions as to what could be factual/possible/viable and what couldn’t. 5. Have groups create Venn diagrams that categorize the STEM themes. • On the left students list themes that they think are factual (possible/viable). • On the right students list themes that they think are fictional (impossible/not viable). • In the middle students list themes that they think have factual & fictional components. 6. Have groups share their diagrams and explain their reasoning for their categorizations. continued on next page Developed by Tamarie Tigh for ABDO Publishing Not for resale • Photocopy and adapt as needed for educational use • www.abdopublishing.com

STEM VENN DIAGRAM continued STEM: Science, Technology, Engineering & Math ADAPTATIONS/VARIATIONS • Assign themes for students to discuss rather than having students decide their own. • Have students use the Internet to research their themes before coming to a final consensus. EXTENSIONS • Develop experiments to test the viability of some of the STEM themes in question. COMMON CORE STATE STANDARDS ADDRESSED Grades 3, 4, 5 & 6 Writing Standards: Research to Build and Present Knowledge 7. Conduct short research projects that build knowledge about a topic. (grade 3) 7. Conduct short research projects that build knowledge through investigation of different aspects of a topic. (grade 4) 7. Conduct short research projects that use several sources to build knowledge through investigation of different aspects of a topic. (grade 5) 7. Conduct short research projects to answer a question, drawing on several sources and refocusing the inquiry when appropriate. (grade 6) Grades 3, 4, 5 & 6 Speaking and Listening Standards: Comprehension and Collaboration 1. Engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions (one-on-one, in groups, and teacher led) with diverse partners…building on others’ ideas and expressing their own clearly. Grades 3, 4, 5 & 6 Speaking and Listening Standards: Presentation of Knowledge and Ideas 4. Report on a topic or text, tell a story, or recount an experience with appropriate facts and relevant, descriptive details, speaking clearly at an understandable pace. (grade 3) 4. Report on a topic or text, tell a story, or recount an experience in an organized manner, using appropriate facts and relevant, descriptive details to support main ideas or themes; speak clearly at an understandable pace. (grade 4) • Report on a topic or text or present an opinion, sequencing ideas logically and using appropriate facts and relevant, descriptive details to support main ideas or themes; speak clearly at an understandable pace. (grade 5) • Present claims and findings, sequencing ideas logically and using pertinent descriptions, facts, and details to accentuate main ideas or themes; use appropriate eye contact, adequate volume, and clear pronunciation.
