Student Eligibility CIF ATHLETIC ELIGIBILTY REQUIREMENTS The California Interscholastic Federation (CIF), which is the governing body for high school athletics in this state, and local school districts are charged with determining the academic eligibility standards for participation. The following is a summary of the eligibility requirements we use at SMHS. Basic Academic Requirement: CIF rule 205 states, In order to be eligible, any student…must have achieved a 2.0 grade point average on a 4.0 scale in enrolled courses at the conclusion of the previous grading period. Additionally, a student must: • Be currently enrolled in at least 20 semester credits of work. • Be passing the equivalent of at least 20 semester credits of work at the completion of the most recent grading period [for SMHS, this means at each quarter]. • Be maintaining minimum progress toward meeting the high school graduation requirements as prescribed by the local governing board. • Have maintained during the previous grading period [quarter] a minimum 2.0 grade-point average on a 4.0 scale, in all enrolled courses. SMHS Probationary Requirement: If a student has not achieved a 2.0 grade point average but has passed a minimum of four classes and has no more than one “F” grade, the student may be on probation for one quarter. At the end of the quarter, if the student has not achieved at least a 2.0 grade point average and is not passing at least four classes, the student will be ineligible for the subsequent quarter. SMHS Citizenship Requirement: A student who receives either one “F” or two “D” grades in citizenship at any time becomes ineligible for a two week period of time or until the grade(s) is raised. Ineligibility may commence due to: • Grades earned at an official grading period.

A written note at any time from a teacher to the administration stating that a student’s citizenship grade in class has dropped to a “D” or an “F.”
