Problem: Clean water is the fuel that supports industry around the globe and fresh water is available in only very limited supplies. In fact, only about 2.5% of all the water on earth is fresh water. Still, it’s all we have to support humans, other animals, plants and industry around the world. Challenge: To conserve our fresh water resources. Solution: One way to meet the challenge is to reduce the volume of contaminated water that enters public lakes and streams as well as treatment systems. That’s a win-win for utilities, the public in general and the environment. That’s the solution AD Greenroof provides. Owner’s Background: Ms. Angie Durhman holds a Master’s Degree in Horticulture from Michigan State University, where she studied green roof plant performance and environmental sustainability. She had been working with a large roofing contractor until the business was impacted by the downturn in the commercial construction industry. With her positive nature, Angie saw this as an opportunity to start her own business. SCORE’s Involvement: In 2012, Ms. Durhman contacted St. Paul SCORE for help in starting her business. She was assigned two mentors, Andrew Braden and Bill Collette, who have experience in the construction field. They met with her and provided basic start-up information as well as ongoing mentoring services which included connecting her with networking opportunities and marketing approaches that work in the construction business.
Business Description: Today, AD Greenroof, LLC provides consulting services to contractors and building owners, who want to design, implement and maintain vegetated green roofs as part of their environmental plan. Using this approach, building owners can retain up to 90% of the water that would normally run off into the sewer system. In addition, this saves substantial energy costs by providing a natural heating/cooling affect and absorbing pollution. Projects: AD Greenroof currently has projects in various phases of design and completion across the country. In the Twin Cities, there are a couple of note: Providing maintenance oversight for the Target Center and working with the City of St. Paul to calculate the benefits of vegetated roofs; both sizeable projects that have made a big impact on urban water run-off.
