Summer Term Newsletter 2015 Number 2 Our App We have sent out 2 messages this week on our App… did you get them? If not please download our APP in the way you would normally. It’s free of charge… please stay in touch. Clubs Letter Out Soon Please look out for the next clubs letter coming out soon. This will need to be returned with payments before 22nd May. After this date places cannot be guaranteed. Attendance at Clubs In the last 3 weeks we have been running 29 clubs per week! In the last 3 weeks we have had over 1000 individual attendances in these clubs! Unfortunately, we have had 3 occasions whereby parents have signed up for clubs for their children then they have not attended a particular session. In all three instances this happened without us being notified in advance. On all three occasions we tried to contact parents and found this problematic, either phone numbers had been changed and the office were not informed or the parents were not able to be reached. Fortunately, in all three instances it was the parent who’d collected their child from the school yard and not informed us of their non-attendance. This is a significant concern to us. On two of these occasions the head teacher had to go to the family home in a last-ditch attempt to ensure the child’s safety before phoning 999 and contacting the police. Please help us to keep your child safe and ensure:  We have your most up-to-date telephone contacts in the school office  That an adult informs us in advance of the session that the child is not attending an after school club (this cannot be left to a child as even the most sensible/reliable child can forget) This matter is of such seriousness to us that we may have to withdraw all after school clubs from the family should this become an issue. Free SAFC Tickets – Ha’Way the Lads! We have a number of tickets to Sunderland vs Leicester game on Saturday 16th May at the Stadium of Light. I would like to give them away FREE of charge. Please call in to see Mr Gill in person and he will give you the number of tickets you require. You can have any number of tickets just as long as:

They are for children currently attending our school and only one extra ticket per family can be given out to ensure a single adult per family can attend. Please don’t ask for more than 1 adult ticket in order that we can ensure that the maximum number of children can benefit. Of course, you have to be a SAFC fan. To ensure this, you may be asked a question by Mr Gill to prove your loyalty to the team. Could you answer this Question? “In the last three years, since March 2012, how many of the derby matches have Newcastle United won?” or, “Who is by far the greatest team the world has ever seen?” If you think you know the answer to either of these questions then please call into see Mr Gill. Tickets can only be handed to adults and not to the children.

Warmer Weather? Dare we say HOT? Not after the recent rain! As the weather is becoming sunnier, we need to be aware of the dangers of exposure to the sun. We have a 15-minute break in the morning and afternoon. At lunchtime break the children can spend over 45 minutes in the sun. Pupils PE lessons are usually outside. This can amount to a great deal of exposure to the sun. In order to protect our children please consider using a long lasting sun cream before sending your child to school. Long lasting sun creams can last over 7 hours and this should be sufficient. Unfortunately, we are not able to administer sun creams ourselves. We have had children sent home after getting sun cream in their eyes. We do not wish to risk this kind of accident happening to other children or risk allergic reactions to sun creams by friends of children bringing in creams and sharing their product. Please do not send creams / sprays in

to school with your child. Please consider using long lasting creams prior to school. A peaked hat could help avoid the glare of the sun and even sunburn. Your child can hang their hat in the cloakroom, and use it at break. Please mark all hats with your child’s name. We would like to encourage the wearing of long sleeved tops, especially at lunchtime. However, school sweatshirts and cardigans are impractical as they will make your child unbearably hot. We would encourage your child to bring to school a plain white long sleeved shirt or blouse. It must be plain white and worn only at breaks and lunchtimes, not to and from school or in lessons. The advantage of this would be:  It will protect arms, shoulders and neck.  White will reflect the heat.  It is an item you may already have at home (older sister/brothers school shirt)  It is cheap to buy (no fashion statements!)  It can be worn loose or buttoned up.  It can be stored in a bag. Water Please don’t forget to pack your child’s water bottle. On hot days, regular drinks of water are essential. Do you know that on the hottest day this week less than half of our pupils were given water bottles from home? For more information please consult the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) http://www.nice.org.uk/ and search for “sun safety”. Please ensure that the bottle contains only water and not soft drinks of any kind including ‘flavoured’ water. Sun Safety From now on we will be having a sun safety promotion in school. On sunny days we will follow the sun safety message and Cover up with clothing (long sleeves and hats) & Use high factor, long lasting sun creams/sprays. These are our badges. If your child is in YR to Y4 they will be given a badge for each day of the week a hat is worn. Children will be encouraged to collect all 5. There will be a Head Teacher’s competition and there will be two ways to win, by collecting 5 out of 5 badges or designing a winning sun safety poster. This will happen soon.

Money Off Holidays Hayes Travel are currently offering 10% off holidays booked during school holiday time. In light of the current Government Regulations changing which will affect leave of absence from school, you may wish to consider this offer.

Uniform and Other Clothing Please ensure your child’s clothing and other possessions are named. We have 3 black sacks of unnamed clothing. Can parents and carers please support the school uniform policy. School cardigans and jumpers are navy blue. We have almost 100% take-up of school uniform. Occasionally we see non school uniform being worn. Children wearing non school uniform will be asked to change. Jewellery and make-up are not to be worn. Nail varnish should not be worn for school. Children will be told to remove jewellery, make-up and nail varnish. If it is not removed we will contact parents and ask for your co-operation. I thank you for your support with this matter. Packed Lunches We have several packed lunch boxes that have not been taken home, some have been discarded for a period of months. Please help us to help you by placing the name of your child on the outside of the box/bag. We will need to discard lunch boxes not collected after a school week. Please do not send your child’s lunch in a plastic carrier bag. Sealable lunch bags and plastic boxes only please. Scooters, Bikes, Flicker-Scooters and PogoSticks We encourage children to come to school on their bikes etc but we ask that we walk our bikes etc. down the drive and across the yard at the start and end of the school day. Head Lice Awareness Now that we are all back to school it is inevitable that when children are in close contact with their peers, incidents of head lice occur. The school nursing service remind us that head lice infestation is a health related issue and our school nurse will be happy to talk to any parents/carers who need advice or may have questions. Anyone requiring detailed information with regards to head lice please see the school nurse. The school nurse drop-in schedule is on the notice boards, our website or alternatively speak to the office staff and ask if the school nurse can contact you. Sports Day 9th June We are appealing for Tombola Prizes. In addition to our usual refreshments stall we are hoping to run a small tombola stall on sports day. If you have any unwanted items that could be a prize or would like to make a donation please see our office team. Unused toiletries, new cuddly toys, wine and other donations will be gladly received. Thank you. Best Wishes, Tony Gill
