OUR KNOWN SICK AND SHUT-IN MEMBERS “I was sick and ye visited me…” Matthew 25:36 (Please notify the Church Office when there is a change in status.)

Beloved Did you know that there are at least a dozen fitness centers in the 11216 zip code? Some of us, like many others, made a resolution to join a gym at the beginning of the New Year; especially since the price is dropped and the cost of joining is so cheap. Yet, many of us have already broken our new year, new body, new healthy lifestyle resolution. Many of us made an honest and earnest pledge to join a gym or start working out two or three times a week. We start out with pledging three times a week, and then go to saying regularly, and then eventually go to saying, I am going to get there as often as I can. A simple truth is we made a resolution when what we really needed to make was a commitment. There is a subtle but important difference. A resolution is a statement in moment of earthly time. A commitment is a pledge for consistent continuity. When one becomes resolute, they take their resolution and make it their commitment. So what does this have to do with church? Well, unfortunately, this same truth appears in our discipleship. Much as becoming a member of a gym can be our biggest pitfall in our fitness, so can being just a member of a church. Membership has its privileges, but discipleship has its responsibilities. We are gifted members of the Body of Christ, called to touch each others’ lives and stimulate mutual growth. If we BE the church, both in the building and outside the building, then we shift from membership to discipleship. We shift from resolution to commitment. It is great to have a life outside the church, but as a disciple our life is never outside the grace of our Christian discipleship. So Beloved, I pray that our membership shifts into discipleship. May God be glorified as we increase our focus on ministering to each other as the church body, and less on just administrating a church organization. Then, the grace afforded to us by Christ, will not be a “cheap grace,” but a grace that resolutely makes us better disciples. With a Shepherd’s Love, Pastor Lacey

And when we do get active, we become more concerned with maintaining buildings than ministering to human lives. Forgive us for what we have done with your church. Renew us to a vital faith that will make us your living church at work in our world. We pray in Jesus' name. Amen.

**THE CALL TO WORSHIP Important as it is to be a church member, it is also a potential hindrance to being a Christian. If we are careless with our faith, church membership can become a poor substitute for discipleship. Being a disciple is a new life in which we live in the awareness that pleasing God is our chief joy. May God help us be faithful with in our discipleship, as we invest our lives in the joy of God’s love. Blessed be the name of the Lord!

hearing it, many of his disciples said, “This is a hard teaching. Who can accept it?” Aware that his disciples were grumbling about this, Jesus said to them, “Does this offend you? 62 Then what if you see the Son of Man ascend to where he was before! 63 The Spirit gives life; the flesh counts for nothing. The words I have spoken to you—they are full of the Spirit and life. 64 Yet there are some of you who do not believe.” For Jesus had known from the beginning which of them did not believe and who would betray him. 65 He went on to say, “This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless the Father has enabled them.” 66 From this time many of his disciples turned back and no longer followed him. 67 “You do not want to leave too, do you?” Jesus asked the Twelve. 68 Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. 69 We have come to believe and to know that you are the Holy One of God.” 70 Then Jesus replied, “Have I not chosen you, the Twelve? Yet one of you is a devil!” 71 (He meant Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot, who, though one of the Twelve, was later to betray him. 61

How an Interracial Couple Changed a Nation

The most striking thing about Mildred and Richard Loving is that they never wanted to be known. They didn't want to change history or face down racism. They just wanted to come home to Virginia to be near their families. The Lovings weren't radicals. They were just two people in love—one of them a taciturn white guy described by one of their lawyers as a "redneck," the other a sweet, soft-spoken young woman of black and American Indian ancestry.

After getting married in Washington, DC, in June 1958, they returned to their home in Central Point, Virginia. Mildred was unaware of her state’s "Racial Integrity Act," a 1924 law forbidding interracial marriage, although she thought her husband knew about it but figured they wouldn’t be prosecuted. Just a month after the Lovings' homecoming, police raided their place at 2 a.m., arrested the couple, and threw them in jail.

Caroline County Circuit Court judge Leon Bazile convicted them on felony charges, writing, "Almighty God created the races white, black, yellow, malay, and red, and he placed them on separate continents. The fact that he separated the races shows that he did not intend for the races to mix." Bazile agreed to suspend their one-year prison sentences if they would leave the state. So the Lovings opted to live in exile in the nation's capital—90 miles from their hometown but a world away from their old rural life.

In 1963, after five years of sneaking back and forth to visit their families, Mildred wrote to Attorney General Robert Kennedy asking for help. Kennedy referred her to the American Civil Liberties Union, which put two young attorneys on the case. Asked by his lawyer whether he had anything to say to the Supreme Court, Richard replied: "Tell the court I love my wife."

The Lovings had no idea they were going to change America. Nor did they particularly want the role. Mildred was quoted, “I wasn't involved with the civil rights movement. We were trying to get back to Virginia. That was our goal." It wasn't until 1967, when the case went to the Supreme Court, that they seemed to realize it was about more than just them.

Much has changed in the past 45 years. Then again, much hasn't.

Much has changed in the past 45 years. Then again, much hasn't.

Guess Who's Coming to Dinner debuted nationally the same year the Supreme Court handed down the Loving decision. And while the film pushed boundaries with its subject matter, it revolved around the mere existence of an interracial couple as opposed to their relationship. Indeed, in real-world interracial relationships, race is impossible to ignore. Sure, it's not something we think about when there are dishes to wash, bills to pay, anniversaries to celebrate, nephews and nieces to play with. But race is always lurking on the sidelines.

Ultimately, the most compelling aspect of the Loving Story is the normalcy of the life it depicts. The normalcy that many of us take for granted. Even so, this story about the Lovings' courage and determination makes us care deeply, and inspires us to look past the politics and punditry to recognize the humanity of the people our laws demonize.
