BACKGROUND ON SUPERFUND SITES

SUPERFUND SITES:THE EFFECTS ON PUBLIC HEALTH & THE ENVIRONMENT  WHAT ARE SUPERFUND SITES?

“Thousands of contaminated sites exist nationally due to hazardous waste being dumped, left out in the open, or otherwise improperly managed. These sites include manufacturing facilities, processing plants, landfills and mining sites” (TOXMAP, 2017).

In 1972 Bridgeport NJ was the first superfund site addressed. However, not much concern was brought to this issue until Love Canal in 1980. President Carter declares a State of Emergency at Love Canal, New York, after a startling increase in skin rashes, miscarriages, and birth defects. (Superfund Histroy, 2017).

BRESLUBE-PENN SUPERFUND SITE  Breslube-Penn was founded in 1982 in Coraopolis, Pa. Penn utilized this site for used-oil refinement until its eventual closure in 1987. Since this time, the site has been placed on the NPL (National Priority List) and in 1996, the EPA identified 36 PRP's (Possibly Responsible Parties) responsible for costs in remediation. These parties installed a cap and slurry wall to contain the spread of hazardous chemicals. A slurry wall is a concrete structure intended to reinforce previously existing walls or help create barriers for water flow.

HOW TO GET INVOLVED Community Advisory Group (CAG) Allows citizens to become directly involved with sites in their area. Community Involvement Training is a hand-on program offered by the EPA which informs citizens on ways to become personally involved in the superfund process.   For further information please visit EPA.gov/superfund
