Sustainable Maryland Application Greenhouse Gas Innovative Demonstration Projects Hyattsville Police Department Anti-Idling Device Installation
Points Requested: 10
In 2014, the City of Hyattsville received funding from the Maryland Energy Administration (MEA) for the installation of anti-idling devices in police vehicles. The purpose of the installation is to reduce fuel consumption by transferring radio and computer systems to a battery backup when vehicle is off, such as when officers are closing a road or at a crime scene. The $45,000 grant enabled the City to install Stealth Power SP2 Edition Units in six police department vehicles. The vehicles selected were those that ranked in the lower 50% of the fleet for fuel efficiency. The systems were installed in the fall of 2015. The antiidling devices work by shutting off the car engine after a designated period of time while still allowing all auxiliary equipment requiring a battery (lights, computers, radio systems) as if the car engine was still on. More information on the actual devices themselves can be found at Stealth Power’s website: http://www.idlereduction.com/idle-reduction-technology/
