Sustainable Maryland Application Health & Wellness Innovative Demonstration Project Cooking Matters Nutritional Tours

The City has partnered up with the DC nonprofit Cooking Matters to provide nutritional tours to seniors and residents with disabilities. The free, monthly series takes residents on a tour of the Price Rite Grocery Store, located within the City’s limits. A trained volunteer leads participants on a tour of the store, while highlighting the nutritional value of everyday food items. Tour participants get a reusable grocery bag and a $10 Price Rite gift card. Transportation is provided at no cost to participants through the City’s Call-ABus service. The City has been conducting the nutritional tours since January 2014, and tour groups tend to have 20 participants. The program is led by two Hyattsville staff, Beryl Johnson, Senior Services Coordinator and Colleen Aistis, Community Services Manager. Tours are advertised through the City’s website, listserv, Facebook page and are noted on the City calendar. The annual budget for the program is $2,000. The program is funded through a grant from Share Our Strength - Cooking Matters, which subsidizes the purchase of gift cards for participants. The tour leaders are volunteers trained in health and nutrition.

Take a FREE Nutritional Tour of the Price Rite Grocery Store at the Shops at Queens Chapel. Volunteers trained by Share Our Strength, Cooking Matters lead participants on short tour of the store highlighting the nutritional value in everyday food items. Tour participants will receive a re-usable grocery bag and a $10 Price Rite Gift Card. Participants must register by 2pm on Wednesday, January 20, 2016 by calling 301.985.5020
