1.) READ 1 Peter 1:1-12 This week Pastor Doug called 1 Peter “The Letter of Hope” and this passage is bursting at the seams with HOPE! Spend some time as a group finding all the HOPEFUL thoughts, ideas, and phrases in this passage. 2.) Verse 3 says that those who are in Christ have been “born again to a living hope.” Why is salvation (being born again) the foundation of HOPE? 3.) While we don’t remember our actual physical birth, the reality of our experience gives evidence that we have been born. What are the spiritual realities in a believer’s life that give evidence that they’ve been born again? 4.) One of the sermon points was that we can have hope for the here and now. READ verse 6 again and identify how a person can have HOPE and even “rejoice” in “grief” and “trials”. Leader Note:
1.) How often could you describe yourself as HOPEFUL? Chart your answer on the graph to the right. 2.) On what things do you (or have you) placed your HOPE other than Jesus Christ? 3.) Do you ever lose sight of the “big picture” of God’s work in you? Why does this effect your HOPEFULNESS? 4.) Has there been a time in your life when you felt HOPELESS? What important truths about God were absent from your mind during that time?
Leader Note:
1.) One definition of crucible is “a situation of severe trial in which different elements interact, leading to the creation of something new.” What have been the refining crucibles in your life and what has been the result? 2.) What does this quote from the famous missionary, Jim Elliot mean – “He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose”? 3.) How often do you think about Heaven – the believer’s HOPE for a guaranteed future? How does it change the way you view this life? Your priorities? Your anxieties? Your resources? 4.) How can you trust God this week through the refining trials that you face in your life? (marriage, parenting, relationships, work, health, finances, etc.) Leader Note:
In Mutual Ministry time, please share with the group how you will (pick one) - Choose to have joy in what God is doing right now in your life, no matter how hard. - Encourage someone you know who is in the midst of a trial. “Born to Hope” – 1.7.18
