Anticipating with Valid Expectation For those who may have lost track, November 30 began our fourth year of using portions of the Revised Common Lectionary (RCL) Scripture readings in our Sunday morning worship gatherings. Since the RCL has been designed as a 3year plan that focuses on the life of Christ according to the traditional church calendar of events, we have just begun our second complete journey through the Gospel accounts of Matthew, Mark, and Luke. Of course, since the celebration of Christ’s birth begins the account of Jesus’ life on this earth, the RCL yearly plan begins just prior to our traditional celebration of Christmas each year, rather than waiting for the first Sunday of January. As a result, we have been reminded again of the events that preceded the initial arrival of Jesus on earth. For example, the Old Testament scriptures recorded several occasions when God spoke directly to His people. In fact, from the Garden of Eden to the prophet Malachi, God had consistently sent His word through various methods and men (“In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets many times and in many different ways.” -Hebrews 1:1). However, after Malachi delivered the word of God, the people of God received nothing from Him or His prophets for at least 400 years. In other words, the people of God found themselves with a perspective similar to ours, as we anticipate the second arrival of Jesus on earth...

. . . Continued from previous page a perspective that could potentially lead a person to doubt, disappointment, and despair. However, God has given us good news and good reasons to trust that He will keep His promise to return. The Apostle Peter reminded his readers in his second letter of God’s good news and reasons to count on Him. In that letter, Peter told us to remember the global flood during the time of Noah. God used Noah to warn the people of the coming flood. He publicized God’s warning for as long as 75 years or more. Even though all of that time passed, the flood did happen according to the warning God sent in advance. In the same manner, God sent many messages that the Messiah... the Christ... Jesus would come to earth. Even though much time passed from the first prophecy, made to Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, to the actual birth of Jesus, it did happen! Yes, the world waited a long, long time... but Jesus was born and brought us salvation (our restoration with God) by His death and resurrection! So, based on God’s perfect historical record, that much more than exceeds all human wisdom and strength, we can celebrate and rejoice in the knowledge that His word is true and completely trustworthy in all things! Why do we hesitate to believe and obey Him so often? Our selfishness, perhaps?

[email protected] . . . Continued The good news within this church family has been the demonstration of unselfishness in recent days. Specifically, in spite of the numerous requests for funds and donations for various projects and needs, members of the First Church family continue to respond in positive ways. From the donations for the Community Thanksgiving meal fellowship, to the shoe box gifts for Operation Christmas Child, to the donations and shopping assistance for the Secret Santa project and others, we continue to see God working through the collective efforts of
this church family. We offer our thanks to God for what you have done for us and others, during this season of celebration, in thankful response to His love and sacrifice through His Only Son, Jesus Christ! And we continue to thank God as He continues to provide all of us with opportunities to share His love and blessings with others who do not know Him yet.
