The Master Gardeners at the Monroe County Cornell Cooperative Extension are offering a short course for new homeowners on how to care for outdoor spaces. If you have recently purchased home or simply have little or no experience with maintaining a lawn, pruning bushes or planting a small garden, this four week/four seminar program will get you started in the right direction. The seminars will focus on those things required to maintain and enhance your lawn, landscaping and overall beauty of your property. These will all be held at the Irondequoit Public Library, 1290 Titus Ave, Rochester, NY 14617. There is no charge but reservations are requested. Call 753-2558 to save your place at one or all four! Site Assessment for Homeowners, Thursday, April 7th at 7:00 pm Learn the tools for evaluating the most critical components of your landscape and gardens. These, coupled with your own priorities, can provide a list of the most critical aspects for you to work on. The areas addressed include site mapping, finding out what kind of soil you have, evaluating sun and shade, water management, airflow, evaluating the state of existing plants and issues with wildlife. How to have a Great Looking Lawn, Thursday, April 14th at 7:00 pm Most new homeowners want a nice looking lawn but are not quite sure how to fix or maintain it. The areas addressed will include cutting (how often, how high), watering, managing weeds, proper fertilization, repairing damages and reseeding. Maintaining your Landscape, Thursday, April 21st at 7:00 pm This class covers a wide variety of topics that all fall under the basic category of maintenance. This class will be a high level overview of the tasks during each season – planting, removing plants, trimming, pruning, weeding, post-winter clean up, fall cleanup, dealing with leaves, watering, fertilizing and dealing with pests. All these will be covered and more. 25 Common Landscaping Gaffs & How to Avoid Them, April 28th at 7:00 pm Property owners – both novice and experienced tend to make the same mistakes that others have made in the past. Wouldn’t you like to know a few of them before you have to learn them the hard way? We will share our list of the repeat mistakes that are most common, based on Master Gardener’s observations of the stories we hear and see.
