YEAR OF MATTHEW
Pentecost
June 2014
When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars that you have established; what are human beings that you are mindful of them, mortals that you care for them?” (Psalm 8: 3-4)
Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ, As I stood on the south rim of the Grand Canyon shortly after Easter I thought of Psalm 8 and our awesome God. The same God who knows the number of hairs on my head (a task that is diminishing, I know) created this amazing place. Words like majestic, glorious, miraculous fail to even come close to conveying the wonder of our creator God. Bobbie witnessed this scene last spring. Our kitchen window over the sink gives views of our back yard. One evening, as she did the dishes, Bobbie saw a hummingbird mating dance. The male, his ruby throat distended and his tail feathers fanned, was flying back and forth in an arc like the weight of a pendulum. The female, perched on a tiny branch of a leafless bush, had her back to the window. She was motionless except for her head. It turned back and forth as she paid rapt attention to her suitor. The scene continued unchanged for several minutes until, without warning, the male withdrew to the hill behind our house. The female (as though considering her options) remained still for several moments, then shivered from beak to tail, spread her wings, and followed.
INSIDE Page 3…Shut-ins, birthdays,
Our God, the One who created the heavens and the earth and each one of us. Who gave us the beautiful weather of our Memorial Day weekend. Who knows and loves each one of us unconditionally is indeed an awesome God. Every aspect of creation from the greatest to the most minute is complex and miraculous. No detail escapes his notice. So what does this God expect from us in response to the glorious gifts of life on this planet he created? Remember the “Great Commandment”? Of course you do. Just look at Matthew 22:34-40. The Pharisees asked Jesus the same question and he quoted from the Old Testament “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind….You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” God has told us what is expected for thousands of years. Total, unwavering, all-encompassing devotion to God. Worship, nothing less. Hmmm, that’s a tall order for busy, self-involved, self-important creatures like us, isn’t it? The discipline required by God is counter cultural in our society today. Traditional “religion” is no longer valued by many. Leisure “family time” and “quality of life” are important. There are so many demands on our limited resources. God knows we have so much to do! Yes God knows. God knows and God hears and God says - PUT GOD FIRST. This is not a suggestion, it is a commandment. Why? Because if you do, God becomes your focus and you can stop worrying about everything else. The first step to making God your priority is worship.

LAMP, the Lutheran Association of Missionaries and Pilots, is a cross-cultural ministry sharing Jesus Christ with God’s people in remote areas of Canada. The major components of LAMP ministry are spiritual witness to and nurture of communities and spiritual enrichment realized by donors and volunteers. LAMP “envisions the day when nations walk together in the light of Christ.” it is a fulfillment of Jesus’ great commission to go, teach, baptize, and make disciples to the ends of the earth. It is with great anticipation that I am joining a team of LAMP volunteers to travel to Big Trout Lake in northern Ontario to teach Vacation Bible School for a week in July. My travel to Big Trout Lake entails driving by car to Sioux Lookout, a mere 13-plus hour drive via the Trans-Canadian Highway. From Sioux Lookout, the whole team (my down-state friends and I are joining a group from Nebraska) will be flown to Big Trout Lake via a volunteer LAMP pilot. In addition to the two-day each way drive, at least five nights in a motel, and food, each participant is asked to make a donation of approximately $350 to help defray the costs of te LAMP program. I am asking the Faith congregation to consider making a donation to LAMP. Your donation does not have to be monetary, even though that would be greatly appreciated. Please join me in prayer for the LAMP ministry as a whole and for my week ministering to the First Nation people of Big Trout Lake. If you choose to make a monetary donation, please write a check to LAMP and place it in my mailbox (the lowest right corner box is mine — it says “Confirmation”). If you will be a prayer partner for me, let me know by putting a note in that same mailbox or e-mailing me at <

PASTOR (con’t from p. 1)
There is really only one way to do that. GO TO CHURCH! No kidding, I mean it and God means it. Attend worship. Discipline yourself, get going and get to church every single week. Don’t expect entertainment, expect gospel. It’s not about amusing you, it’s about worshiping God. It’s about letting Jesus show you how God wants to you live. It’s about living a full, meaningful life grounded in the love of God through the crucified and resurrected Christ. No, communing with nature is not enough. God is not satisfied with an occasional “Atta Boy!” as we stand at the Grand Canyon. God wants your heart. This summer (and may it be a blessing to you) go to church wherever you are, and praise the Lord. Then bring back a bulletin from the congregations you visited and we’ll post them in the narthex like we did last year. Let your presence be a blessing to others as you praise our creator God for all the blessings in your life. May you have a blessed and peaceful summer,
Plan to join us Sunday, June 8 for the
annual Faith Men’s Barbeque. This year’s theme will be
