YEAR OF MARK
Christmas/Epiphany
January 2015
“And the one who was seated on the throne said, ‘See, I am making all things new.’” (Revelation 21:5) Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ, Happy New Year! I hope you find 2015 to be a year of renewal in your life; a year filled with joy, and prayer, and gratitude; a year in which you find the courage to respond to the opportunities and challenges that God will surely provide. Yes, it’s a new year and we think of making alterations in the way we live. Perhaps you are contemplating adopting a healthier lifestyle; quitting a bad habit; mending a broken relationship; changing your attitude; reaching out to new opportunities. The New Year usually provokes those kinds of thoughts. Of course, every new day is a gift from God, so in reality, each morning God is “making all things new”. That opportunity comes each and every day so how do we respond? With gratitude, that’s how. Thank God for each new day because it is a precious gift. Consider it a divine gift card to be spent any way you choose. How will you spend your gift card? I suggest you spend it in prayer. What, you say? Sorry, I don’t live in some cloistered, isolated monastic order; I live in the real world. I have real responsibilities, real health concerns, real financial burdens, real family issues. I may drop to my knees in a crisis, but the rest of the time I have to function. Yes, I agree, of course you do. But prayer isn’t always a heads bowed, eyes closed activity. Think of the last time you missed hitting that deer as you sped down the road. There was that “Oh my God!” moment wasn’t there? It was instinctive wasn’t it? What if you kept God in the forefront of your mind in non-crisis moments? God wants to be with you in the ordinary times too. Do you only talk with your close friends, the people you love when you’re in trouble? Of course not, you share all your thoughts with them because you love them and you trust them to love you. It’s the same with God. When Paul advises that we “pray without ceasing” (1 Thessalonians 5:17) he’s talking about staying connected to God in our everyday, hum drum existence. It will give you peace and help you to function better than ever.
That leads to joy and gratitude. I’m not saying you will spend your days giggling, but you will spend your days feeling positive about yourself because the fact that you are a beloved child of God will be an intrinsic part of your core beliefs and that leads to gratitude. You feel whole and valued, which in turn leads to confidence, which leads to courage.
