Dear Parents and Guardians, It was a great honour to be present with Michael Keir, Dot & Alan Parnell and family and friends of Kellie Keir at last Saturday’s Diocesan Mark Mappas Awards evening. The Mark Mappas Awards recognizes the outstanding contributions that parent and volunteers make to the life of our Townsville Diocesan Catholic School Communities. Kellie was nominated for the award by our St Joseph’s Parents and Friends Association. Our Executive Director Dr Cathy Day, set the scene for the evening in her opening address. Cathy made special mention of Kellie and acknowledged the presence of her family. In the course of the evening, the MC, Laurence Hosking, read out the citations of each of the award recipients. Due to time constraints, Laurence was only able to read out sections of each individual’s citation. When it came to Kellie’s award, Laurence read the whole citation. Michael was then called to accept the award which resulted in the packed ballroom giving him, his family and Kellie a standing ovation. As I drove home that night I felt incredibly grateful to have witnessed this outpouring of gratitude, love and emotion for Kellie, Michael and their family and friends, the memory of which will remain with me forever. I include the Kellie’s citation here that was written by Michael and family. Thank you to the Townsville Catholic Education Office staff and the Townsville Diocesan P & F Association for their hard work and organisation of this annual event.
Gala Sports Day Our Year 6 students attended the inaugural Townsville Diocesan Gala Sports Day. Thank you to our staff, Marion, Anthony, Bridgette and Kevin for taking our students on the day. It was great to hear the positive comments about the day. A wonderful opportunity for our Townsville Catholic Education students to come together in the friendly spirit of competition.
Reminder A reminder to all parents (and visitors), that when visiting the school they are required to come into the school office. If parents need to pass on a message or give something to their children, they are still required to come into the office and not go directly to their child’s classroom.

Kellie Ann Keir (1971 -2015) Kellie was a successful litigation lawyer, but during her child raising years (2001 – 2015) Kellie wound back her professional career to part time so that she could focus on her primary love – motherhood ! During this time Kellie volunteered for many roles and activities within the catholic school environment, guiding her 4 sons (and others) through their first timid steps of early childhood learning towards more confident strides in the primary and secondary school arenas. Connor, Harrison, Darcy and Samuel will forever be the beneficiaries of Kellie’s time with them at this critical phase when she helped shape their own personalities and character. Kellie’s roles and activities included: Committee member for Mike Reynolds early child centre, with all the commitment of time and effort which goes hand in glove with these positions; Committee member for the Rose Bay kindergarten; Serial support-a-reader at St Josephs the Strand; Frequent helper, contributor and participant with school activities like beachathon; School trivia night legend; A constant presence at school activities, like weekly assembly, St Patrick’s nights, Concerts, swimming and athletics carnivals etc. One of the “first on the scene people” to help welcome and integrate new comers into the St Josephs broader community. Organizer of various mothers day functions and weekly coffee crew catch ups of the “Kellie Gang”. Kellie’s more intangible contributions to the catholic school community life were heightened when Kellie’s own life came under threat with a diagnoses of pancreatic cancer 3 years ago. Despite unimaginable personal circumstances Kellie was always eager to attend as many school related activities as possible, savoring every moment. Her smile and positive attitude would melt away any apprehension felt by those around her and subliminally encourage others to likewise savor the blessings in every moment. Amazingly, during this 3 year period Kellie was able to organize and recruit many of the catholic community to her highly successful fundraising activities under the team banner of Love Over Cancer, like: Head shaving events at school; Fashion Passion exchange; High teas; Relay for Life; Corporate lunches. During this time Kellie also galvanized the community around her family, as they were the recipients of unsolicited kindness and generosity of spirit in the form of: Meals; Help with the boys busy schedules, particular when Kellie was in Brisbane receiving treatment; Coffee time; Prayer and healing time, including but not limited to the St Joseph's church; An ear and a shoulder when needed the most; Fun time when also need the most.
The saying that it takes a village to raise a child was never more apt than in the case of Kellie’s sons, as they have been fortunate enough to have many surrogate mothers and guardians from the talented pool of parents in the catholic community, and particularly those associated with St Josephs the Strand. It is a testament to the wonderful catholic ethos that so many people, from such a broad spectrum, were so eager to assist Kellie and her family in a time of great need.
As Kellie would say “Be Kind”.

If your grandparents were unable to attend, it might be nice to get the children to make contact and share with them why they love them. World Teacher’s Day Assembly: At next week’s assembly 5OC will be celebrating the wonderful and gifted teachers that we have in our school. We are extremely lucky to have the dedicated group of teachers that we have. Mini Vinnies: This Saturday our compassionate group of Year 6 students will be visiting the residents of Villa Vincent. I have been with the students on a few occasions and it always humbling to see the joy on the residents’ faces as they interact with our young students. The act of service for others has a wonderful effect on students. Mission Month and Socktober: On Wednesday our School Captains and Student Representatives attended Mass at St Clare’s to celebrate Catholic Mission month with the other Catholic Schools. As a school we celebrated it with assembly last week and we also ask the children to wear crazy socks next Friday and bring a gold coin donation. The theme for this year’s appeal is ‘I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink (Matthew 25:35)’. It is not only important to fundraise, but it also important to educate the children about the global issues to pray for those less fortunate than ourselves. Feel free to talk and pray about some of these world issues at your dinner table. If you would like further information go to the Catholic Mission website. Please keep in your prayers: Jenny Roberts family

[email protected] Gracious God, we are creatures of flesh and spirit. We seek that which nourishes the body and we seek that which nourishes the soul. We call to mind the Samaritan woman who encountered Jesus at the well. In the noonday sun she came to draw water. In her shame she came… and was transformed by “living water” – the Spirit and Truth of Jesus. God all gift, transform us that we may transform the world. Let US be the river of your own life and love.
Make us your living water… transforming fear into hope, intolerance into acceptance, ignorance into knowledge, illness into wellness, want into sufficiency, that those who are most in need may enjoy life in all its fullness. We make our prayer through Jesus, your Son, who is the Way, the Truth and the Life. AMEN.

TCEO Festival of Sports (Gala Day) Last Friday, our year 6 students participated in a TCEO Festival of Sports (Gala Day). This is a new initiative endorsed by the TCEO, where students from Catholic Schools around Townsville and Thuringowa join together to participate in various sports on offer. The emphasis is on participation, sportsmanship and enjoying the social aspect that sport has to offer. St Joey’s fielded teams in Basketball and Oztag. These sports complemented our PE lessons in recent weeks. All teams are to be commended on the spirit in which they played as they enhanced Joey’s reputation of playing in a fair and respectful manner. Our Division 1 Girls team, lifted the inaugural Trophy as overall winners in a tight contest with Ryan. Our Division 1 Boys Oztag team came in second overall, with Ryan just getting the better of them. All teams are to be congratulated on their efforts during the day. We thank our super coaches Mrs. Offermans and Mr.Thomson on helping out with Basketball at Murray Stadium.
