THURSDAY, 9 JUNE 2016 CRIME STOPPERS URGES BRIMBANK COMMUNITY TO DOB IN A DEALER IN FIRST METROPOLITAN CAMPAIGN Crime Stoppers Victoria is calling on residents of the westerns suburbs to report what they know about the manufacture and distribution of crystal methylamphetamine (‘ice’) and other illicit drugs in their neighbourhoods. The charity is launching its two-week intensive Dob in a Dealer campaign in the Melbourne suburb of Sunshine today (Thursday, 9 June) to gather information about local drug dealing activity. The Brimbank campaign is the first of five to be rolled out in Melbourne’s suburbs in 2016. Residents are urged to contact Crime Stoppers to confidentially report any information relating to people who may be bringing harmful drugs into the local community. “Information from the community leads to real results when it comes to breaking the cycle of crime,” said Crime Stoppers Victoria CEO Sam Hunter, “arrests are made and warrants are executed as a result of reports to Crime Stoppers. “Dob in a Dealer is a community engagement campaign. It’s about empowering every member of the community to play a part in reducing the manufacture and supply of illicit drugs. “Help us to stop the manufacture, stop the distribution, stop the supply. “We urge the Sunshine and Brimbank community and all Victorians to pick up the phone and call Crime Stoppers confidentially on 1800 333 000 or report online at crimestoppersvic.com.au anything you know about the manufacture, supply and dealing of illicit drugs in your neighbourhood. “Any information Crime Stoppers receives is handled in utmost confidence. You do not have to give your name or any personal details. There is no caller ID or IP tracing.” The Brimbank campaign is being launched by Crime Stoppers Victoria in collaboration with Victoria Police. Since April 11 the campaign has been delivered in seven regional Victorian cities, contributing to an average increase of 130 per cent in drug-related Information Reports to Crime Stoppers. In total 17 campaigns will be delivered in Victoria between April to July and more than 75 nation-wide.

THURSDAY, 9 JUNE 2016 The campaign assists in the detection and disruption of drugs being supplied across the nation. Victoria Police Insp for Brimbank, David Byrt, said: “Our front line police are all too familiar with the devastating impacts illicit drugs can have on a person, their family and those in their community. “We need a whole of community approach to tackle the flow of these harmful substances in to our neighbourhoods and Dob in a Dealer provides the community with a way to contribute to this fight by providing information, confidentially, about drug manufacture and dealing in their area. “The smallest piece of information could save someone’s life.” Methylamphetamine is a complex issue involving not only law enforcement, but is increasingly identified as a health issue. Dob in a Dealer is aimed at identifying the manufacturers and distributors of methylamphetamine and other illicit drugs, rather than the end user. Crime Stoppers is aware that some people reporting may have an existing addiction to drugs or may be family members of someone suffering an addiction. Crime Stoppers will refer those who require assistance to local health care agencies where they can discuss treatment options. If you or someone you know is affected by drug use or addiction, please contact support services such as Family Drug Help on 1300 660 068 or Youth Support and Advocacy Service on 1800 014 446.
