‘Tis the Season to Recycle! FREE CHRISTMAS TREE RECYCLING We will be collecting Christmas trees free of charge after the holidays. To have your tree recycled please bring it to the curbside on your greenwaste collection day. If you do not have greenwaste service, bring your tree to the curbside on your trash collection day. Christmas trees can also be dropped off for free at MarBorg’s facility located at 119 North Quarantina Street in Santa Barbara or at the South Coast Recycling & Transfer Station (free through January 14), located at 4430 Calle Real in Santa Barbara. PLEASE REMOVE ALL TREE STANDS, LIGHTS, TINSEL AND ORNAMENTS, AND CUT ANY TREES THAT ARE OVER 6 FEET IN LENGTH SO THEY WILL FIT IN OUR TRUCKS. For more information about Christmas tree recycling or for tips on preventing and reducing waste during the holiday season, please visit the County’s waste reduction website, www.LessIsMore.org.
HOLIDAY WASTE PREVENTION It is estimated that between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day, more than 1 million tons of additional waste is generated each week nationwide. Use these tips to help reduce your waste this holiday season!
I Get creative with your wrapping paper by reusing things like maps, the Sunday comics, and posters. H About 40% of all battery sales occur during the holiday season. This year, switch to reusable batteries. I Consider giving an experience instead of an object. The gift of your time (cooking, babysitting), a charitable donation, or tickets to an event are all great gift ideas that require little to no packaging. G Don’t forget your reusable shopping bags. STATEWIDE PLASTIC BAG BAN With the passage of proposition 67 during our recent election, California has become the first state in the nation to adopt a statewide ban on the distribution of plastic grocery bags. The law was originally designed to take effect on July 1, 2015 under SB 270 but was delayed when the plastics industry gathered enough signatures to put the issue before voters as a referendum measure. As a result of the referendum’s passage, the ban now goes into effect immediately. Most of MarBorg’s customers will not notice this new law because the City of Santa Barbara and the unincorporated areas of Santa Barbara County already have a ban in place. The cities of Buellton and Goleta, however, did not previously have a ban ordinance, so these communities will now be impacted by the new statewide law. The ban prohibits the use of plastic bags by grocery stores, pharmacies, mini-marts, and liquor stores. Impacted businesses must now charge 10 cents for a paper bag and will sell or give away reusable bags. Other types of retailers, such as department stores, are not affected. For more information about the plastic bag ban, check out www.LessIsMore.org/supbb or call the County Public Works Department at 882-3600.
Residential trash customers are entitled to two “bulky item” pick-ups per year at no charge. Accepted items include furniture, appliances, electronics like TVs and computers, and other large household items that will not fit in your curbside trash container. Loose trash and construction and demolition materials are not allowed. Alert our customer service representative if you have bulky items, electronic items, or both. Place your items at the curb by 6 a.m. on the day of the pickup, or the night before. Call us at 963-1852 for further details or to schedule an appointment.
FREE EXTRA HOLIDAY WASTE COLLECTION Customers can put out up to 95 gallons of extra trash, greenwaste, and recyclables on their regular collection days for the two weeks following Christmas and we will pick it up for free. All extra items should be bagged or bundled, and no bulky waste is allowed.
