BUELLTON EDITION – Fall/Winter 2017

‘Tis the Season to Recycle! FREE CHRISTMAS TREE RECYCLING We will be collecting Christmas trees free of charge after the holidays. To have your tree recycled please bring it to the curbside on your green waste collection day. If you do not have green waste service, bring your tree to the curbside on your trash collection day. PLEASE REMOVE ALL TREE STANDS, LIGHTS AND ORNAMENTS, AND CUT ANY TREES THAT ARE OVER 6 FEET IN LENGTH SO THEY WILL FIT IN OUR TRUCKS. Want your tree mulched? Bring your Christmas tree to Riverview Park on Saturday, January 13, 2018 from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. HOLIDAY WASTE PREVENTION It is estimated that between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day, more than 1 million tons of additional waste is generated each week nationwide. Use these tips to help reduce your waste this holiday season!

❆ Get creative with your wrapping paper by reusing things like maps, the Sunday comics, and posters. ❅ About 40% of all battery sales occur during the holiday season. This year, switch to reusable batteries. ❆ Consider giving an experience instead of an object. The gift of your time (cooking, babysitting, gardening) a charitable donation, or tickets to an event are all great gift ideas that require little to no packaging. ❄ Don’t forget your reusable shopping bags. ✺ And when the holidays are over, remember that wrapping paper, greeting cards, tissue paper, cardboard boxes, and hard plastic packaging can all be recycled in your blue recycle carts!

Winter Holiday Schedule THANKSGIVING, CHRISTMAS AND NEW YEAR’S DAY COLLECTION UPDATES The collection schedule for City of Buellton residents will not change for the Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s holidays. unlimited FREE greenwaste carts In the City of Buellton, the cost of your residential trash service includes unlimited greenwaste containers. If you find yourself in need of extra capacity for your greenwaste, and are tempted to blow your excess Autumn leaves into the street—put down the leaf blower and pick up the phone! Make sure your greenwaste makes it inside the container! Give our office a call at (805) 963-1852 and we can have additional containers delivered to your door.

Why Is It Bad to Blow? Buellton’s street sweepers are not designed to handle bulk green waste on the street. • Leaves blown into the street clog storm drains and pollute local waterways and catchment areas. • Leaf blowing removes important nutrients from the yard, which homeowners oftentimes re-purchase in the form of fertilizer from the local garden center. • During times of drought, leaf blowers send dry earth airborne which negatively impacts air quality and is especially harmful for those with asthma.
