statement of intent

As a designer and craftsperson, I seek to examine the impact of our choices in the world, and make positive change through our material culture. I believe that connecting disparate domains of knowledge and creating opportunities for reflection is the greatest potential of design.

previous experience 2014-2015 Research Assistant - Passive Solar GreenHAUS Working with a team of professors and students at OCAD U, I helped to design and build a super-efficient greenhouse capable of growing fresh greens through a Canadian Winter. I was responsible for construction drawings and budgeting, and assisted in construction and onging testing and promotion efforts, helping to attract interest from organizations like FoodShare Toronto and The Stop Community Food Bank. Project details at http://research.ocadu.ca/sbl/project/passive-urban-greenhaus-project. 2014-2015 Studio Monitor - OCAD University At the Metal Shop, Woodworking Shop and, previously, Modelmaking Shop at OCAD, I assist students in all aspects of tool usage, aid in resolving technical challenges in their designs, and promote shop safety and good work habits. Cleaning and maintaining the tools and shop environment forms the other part of this job.

2012-2014 Shops And Studios Representative - OCAD Student Union During my tenure as a elected member of the Student Union’s Board of Governors, I worked to advance student issues around Shop usage and access at the University. I also organized workshops and talks, with guests ranging from artist-blacksmith Robb Martin (Thak the Blacksmith) to the founders of AeroVelo, makers of the world’s first human-powered helicopter.

2012-2015 Creative Director - grOCAD During a long involvement with this dynamic student group, focused on urban agriculture and sustainability, I volunteered in all aspects of group operations - design, building, financial recordkeeping, grantwriting and promotions and outreach. To date we have designed and built four major “window farm” hydroponic units, hosted many workshops, and collaborated with organizations both within the school and across the city.
