Why We Shake Hands Dear Region 60 Families,
David Jones Regional Commissioner
How many of you pay attention to the handshake at the end of a game?
Of course, we all pay attention to the goals, the daring tackles, or a beautiful pass just beyond the reach of a defender that lands perfectly at the foot of a striker.
OCTOBER 21, 2017
And that’s why the handshake is so important. Because, in that simple act, we show our respect for the boy or girl who is much more than just a player on the field, and we show our gratitude for the coaches, referees, parents and family members who make the game possible. That’s really what’s most important, isn’t it? So, remember to pay attention to the handshake. And remind your player to shake hands not only with all of the players on the other team, but with the other team’s coaches, and the referees too.
A handshake seems quaint in comparison, almost an afterthought. No one would really miss it if nobody shook hands, would they? Maybe. But maybe not. The handshake just might be one of the most important things that happens in every soccer game. And it’s probably the most overlooked. Outside the soccer field, what is the real value of those goals and tackles and passes? Those skills are almost meaningless in the real world of school and work. Most of our children are not going to be professional soccer players. Even those that get college scholarships will do so more to further their education than their soccer skills. But all of our children need to learn how to work together, as a team, toward a common goal; to accept individual responsibility; to recognize today’s opponent may be tomorrow’s teammate; and to accept the difference between the game on the field, and life beyond it. That is the real value of playing soccer, or any other sport.

U10-U14 TEAM STANDINGS
as of end of play on 10-14-17
Teams are listed in standing order, first to last, based on (1) average game points per game; (2) head-to-head competition (not used when more than two teams are tied); (3) fewest number of goals allowed per game; (4) fewest cautions & send-offs; and (5) coin toss. W=wins, T=ties, L=losses, GA=goals allowed, GF=goals for, GP=game points (6 for a win, 3 for a tie, 1 for a loss or forfeit). Deductions from total game points: FD = 1 point for each forfeited game, RD = 1 point for each missed referee assignment, SD = 1 point for each goal beyond a 5-point differential. RD and SD deductions are applied only in 10U. Opening matches are not shown. A Note About Team Standings We have discovered a problem with the Blue Sombrero system's reporting of some team stats and standings on our website. • While we make a distinction between a lost game (1 game point) and a forfeited game (0 game points), the system can't. • The system miscalculated the number of games played in 12UB and the byes in 10UG. • The system does not allow us to adjust game points to reflect deductions for forfeits, blow-outs and missed referee assignments. We are working with Blue Sombero to fix these problems. Meanwhile, we will calculate and post stats and standings independantly from Blue Sombrero's builtin module. Please disregard the on-line Team Central Scores and Standings until further notice.
