Town Building Inspector Brian Head Town seeks qualified applicants to serve as the Town Building Inspector. Under the direction of the Public Works Director, the Building Inspector performs a variety of technical and administrative duties including the responsibility for on-site inspections, review of construction plans and specifications for compliance with International Building Code and the Town’s adopted Land Management Code. This position will be required to perform general public works tasks, such as snow removal, during times when building inspection workload is low. The successful candidate will have excellent interpersonal skills, impeccable integrity, and the ability to work effectively with limited supervision. Requires a high school diploma or GED, residential ICC certifications, and one to three years of direct experience. Starting salary range is expected to be $38,000 to $42,000, negotiable depending on experience. The Town’s excellent benefits package includes health insurance, dental, vision, and retirement. Building Inspector Building 4/2015 Full-time Regular/Non-exempt

POSITION SUMMARY: Under the direction of the Public Works Director, performs a variety of technical/professional duties related to planning, organizing and coordinating residential and commercial building inspections; oversees land use applications; and recommends codes and ordinances and enforces and interprets the same. No supervision exercised. ACCOUNTABILITY/RESPONSIBILITES:  Develops and proposes building department policies and procedures related to plan checking, inspection and code enforcement;  Reviews construction applications and recommends approval or disapproval of construction applications;  Coordinates with regard to land use and subdivision development and zoning ordinance enforcement;  Develops and manages subdivision recording processes and shepherds subdivision projects to completion;  Provides technical insight and recommendations related to determining land use and zoning ordinances, policies, goals and objectives;  Organizes property legal descriptions and related legal documents for filing and recording;  Develops strategies for improved customer service;  Performs research, converts strategies to action plans with timetables and deadlines;  Makes recommendations to Town Manager for changes and alterations in building codes and ordinances;  Meets with public, developers, entrepreneurs, and contractors;  Reviews site plans, conditional use permits, and re zoning applications;  Reviews development plans for code compliance;  Performs compliance monitoring for "in home" and general town businesses.  Enforces town ordinances, codes, and regulations in accordance with Town code enforcement policy;  Advises property owners, builders, contractors, architects, or developers as needed to apprise appropriate parties of concerns and potential violations;  Conducts regular review of codes, ordinances and regulations;  Makes recommendations related to practical application of codes and ordinances, and adapts, modifies or rewrites codes as needed;

 

Prepares and provides written and oral reports to town council, boards, committees, and public interest groups as required; Performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Considerable knowledge of principles and practices related to local government; planning and zoning and subdivision law, theory and application; liability issues which arise out of investigative procedures; effective interpersonal communications; town and state codes and ordinances related to multiple aspects of public works, and property rights, boundaries, subdividing and zoning, signing etc.; legal system and securing sanctions for violations; various investigative techniques; report writing; skill in public relations and the delivery of public presentations; in the art of diplomacy and cooperative problem solving; must have the ability to enforce regulations with firmness, tact, and impartiality; must keep operating records and maintain various written reports; read maps and locate property; establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other agencies and the public; shall comprehend and interpret complex regulations related to zoning and other town ordinances. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE Required: • Graduation from high school (or equivalent), plus residential ICC certification • Ability to obtain commercial ICC certification within 18 months • One (1) to three (3) years of directly related experience Preferred:  Three (3) years of responsible experience related to local government ordinance enforcement and investigation PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORK ENVIRONMENT: Tasks require a variety of physical activities not generally involving muscular strain. Physical demands may occur in activities related to walking, standing, stooping, sitting, reaching, etc.; talking, having and seeing required in the daily performance of job duties; must have mental applications utilizing memory for details, emotional stability, discriminating thinking, and creative problem solving. Periodic travel required in course of performing portions of job functions. Occasional exposure to hazardous environmental conditions associated with the job.
