Towson University in Northeastern Maryland Bel Air, Maryland higher education | 60,000 sf | LEED Silver This academic center establishes a new and second campus for Towson University in Northeastern Maryland, an area underserved by a major university. The site is a sloping meadow ringed with mature trees that opens westward to expansive open views. The building is conceived as ‘learning garden’ with two masonry wings enveloping a central commons. The wings are imagined as natural rock outcroppings and the commons as an extension of the meadow, thus creating a continuity between indoor and outdoor space and between the natural and the manmade. The central commons contains collaborative and social gathering spaces and the wings house classrooms, labs and seminar spaces. A ventilated rain screen façade, solar shading, and bio retention will help the building achieve LEED Silver.
