Transcribed Letter from Frederick DeLano Avery (1895-1980) to his mother Annie Haley Barstow1 (18581921) written May 13, 1917 Mrs. N. Fred. Avery 40 Jefferson Ave., Grand Rapids Michigan Saturday Dear Mother1 I have been onshore for two days and expect to be for a couple more as we are having our engine overhauled to get them in first class shape. Saw Ralph Buckley2 today; he is a second class mechanic and is not at present drilling at the armory. I think there are about fourteen from G. R. here now. Our ship’s [xxx’s] family is here now and he has invited me out to dinner at the Menchinger King3, so am looking forward to a real dinner to-night. I have plenty of money just now, but will let you know if my meal ticket gives out. Have not yet succeeded in visiting “Greenode”4. Will probably let it go until you come. It is hard to say what I will be doing in June but as it is now I can probably get off for forty-eight hours. I will apply for a leave of 48 hours soon and go to Princeton5 and fix up my belongings. I had a letter from John Ferris6; he is in Orange, N. J. Blair has just returned from the Torpedo Nation7 and states that the comforts of home are entirely lacking in his present calling and his beans for breakfast are a bit monotonous. I have plenty of clothes With love Frederick.

The following is excerpted from the Princeton Alumni Weekly, January 26, 1981: FRED, WHOM WE affectionately called Pug, joined our class in our sophomore year. He had been at the Univ. of Wisconsin for a year. He was a Hill School graduate, and a native of Grand Rapids, MI. He became a very popular classmate, a member of the football squad and Ivy Club. Fred left Princeton in junior year to serve as an ensign in the U.S. Navy in foreign waters. WW II found him back in the Navy again, for three and a half years as a lieutenant commander in the Amphibious Forces.] [unknown / researching] [unknown / researching]
