Transcribed Letter from Frederick DeLano Avery (1895-1980) to Noyes Latham Avery1 (1881-1947) Postmarked Newport, Rhode Island, April 16, 1917 on US Navy stationary Mr. Noyes L. Avery Michigan Trust Company2 Grand Rapids Michigan April 16, 1917 Dear Noyes, Sorry to hear that your son3 and probably daughter4 have acquired scarlet fever. Hope they are getting along all right. In answer to your query as to my precise status I am at present coxswain U.S. N.R.F. or in other words in the naval reserve or Mosquito fleet5. There are already five companies here and I am in the first. They are all college fellows and a good crowd in the main. About half of our company has been assigned to sub. chasers of Half Moon style and the other half including myself is at present doing police duty in Newport. I think we will be on this job about a week after which we will go on boats and the police job will be relegated to the second company. As it is now there are 48 of us on police duty working in 24 hour shifts. We have regular beats, 4 hours on and 4 hours off. We carry a two foot billie and are expected to keep order among the sailors and if necessary conduct them to the brig. By the end of the week I hope to be qualified for a star on Uncle Haley’s6 force. We all were vaccinated for small-pox and shot in the arm for diphtheria the other day and the next day I was a bit low but am all right again. The first couple of weeks I stayed at the Army & Navy Y.M.C.A. but now have moved to more comfortable quarters at Address > 24 Old Beach Road Newport, R.I. Best to all - Avery

Possibly refers to either Caleb Barstow (1853-1929) or Gideon Barstow (1851-1934), both uncles to F.D.A. and may have had nicknames “Haley”. Thomas Haley Forrester Barstow (1813-1871), while referred to by family as Haley is F.D.A.’s grandfather and would have been deceased at the time. Thomas Haley Barstow (18871943) may also have been referred to as Haley, but is F.D.A.’s cousin not uncle.]
