Council Housing Assessment of a Transfer application is based on the actual date of registration as well as housing need, and the degree of need will depend on the particular circumstances of the application. However, ordinary Transfers have a very low priority and it may be a long time before you can be offered another home, unless you are willing to consider properties in low demand. Therefore, if you are either wishing to move in the near future, or are not eligible to register on the Transfer list, please read the following guidance notes on the various alternatives that may be open to you.

Housing Associations On occasions the Council is able to nominate applicants for properties managed locally by Housing Associations active in the town, which include:•

Orbit Housing Association

Leicester Housing Association

Bedfordshire Pilgrims Housing Association

Places for People (Formerly North British Housing Association)

Shire Homes

Mutual Exchanges Mutual Exchange can be a quicker alternative. You are entitled to exchange with other Local Authority or Housing Association tenants in most parts of the country as well as Corby. We can give you addresses of other Council tenants who may be willing to exchange with you, or you can advertise your own exchange in the press, or in the folder at our One Stop Shop. Introductory Tenants are not permitted to exchange within the first twelve months of their tenancy.

Housing Associations offer accommodation at market rents. The accommodation is modern and you would have similar security of tenure, under the Housing Act 1996, to that of your Council tenancy. If you are nominated from the Transfer list and accept a tenancy with one of the Housing Associations you will be considered as adequately housed and your application will have been used.
