Tutorial Letter: Guidelines for Examination International Marketing (M3) Semester One 2014 Dear Student This tutorial letter provides you with a breakdown of the layout of the International Marketing examination as well as areas where students have struggled in the past. 1.
Layout of the examination
The format of the examination hasn’t changed; it still consists of six (6) questions of 25 marks each, where the student is required to answer any four (4) of the six (6) questions. These questions are divided into sub-questions, which add up to 25 marks. 2.
Problem areas in past examinations
Students aren’t familiar with the action verbs used in the questions. When they are asked to discuss they simply make a list, which will not show the marker that you understand the theory asked. Hence familiarise yourself with the different action verbs and what they actually ask of you when compiling an answer. Students aren’t familiar with the various types of models discussed in the theory and are often not able to identify a model. Hence in preparing for your upcoming examination it is important that you familiarise yourself with all models to ensure you know what the model is called and are able to explain the theory. It is also easier to be awarded marks if you are providing examples to the theory, however look at the mark allocation and what is required of you before writing essays, which brings up the next point. Please always look at the mark allocation of the question/sub-question so that you can divide your time and attention accordingly. For example, if the question is asking you to discuss for 5 marks, please don’t provide an essay; two in-depth to the point paragraphs should be appropriate, obviously allocating most of your time to the questions having the greater weighting in terms of marks.

Students are to familiarise themselves with key terms mentioned in the module, such as nationalisation, confiscation, protectionism, expropriation, etc. There are many terms so please familiarise yourself with all of them and be able to explain these terms in your own words. Lastly, a key recommendation in the preparation of your upcoming examination is to do some research on different countries (a country other than your own). As you work through your study material use these countries to apply the theory you are learning. This will help you in the examination to provide practical examples of key terms, models and the theory, hence providing the marker with the confidence that you thoroughly understand what is being asked of you.
