Length of game:

Four 8-minute quarters. Two minute quarter break. Five minute half-time interval between the second and third quarters.

Start of the game:

Two teams. Three players per team on the field. A coin toss is conducted with the visiting team calling the toss. The winner of the coin toss chooses which end to defend. The other team automatically kicks off. The team who kicks off the first quarter kicks off the second quarter. The teams switch ends of the fields at half-time. The other team kicks off the third and fourth quarters.

Kick off:

The ball is placed in the center of the center circle. The team kicking off may be in the center circle but on their own half of the field. Opponent team must be outside the center circle and on their own half of the field and remain there until the ball is kicked. The kicker can only kick the ball once until touched by someone else.

Goal scored:

When the ball completely crosses the goal line, between the goal posts and under the crossbar, a goal has been scored. Restart the game by placing the ball in the center of the center circle and the team who did not score kicks off. Goals may only be scored from the attacking half of the field. No score is allowed direct from the kick off. A goal kick would result if this happens.

Ball leaves the field over the touchline:

The ball must completely cross the touchline before it is not in play. The team who did not touch the ball last throws the ball in to put it back into play. The throw-in takes place where the ball left the field. The thrower must keep both feet on the ground and both feet must be on or behind the touchline when the ball is thrown. The ball comes from over and behind the head. If not done correctly, the same thrower gets a second, or third or fourth chance to throw the ball in. Please instruct the thrower how to correctly take the throw-in each time they do so incorrectly.

Half-time:

Teams change sides of the field. This is only done at half-time. Teams remain on the same side of the field for two quarters. Half-time is 5 minutes long between the second and third quarters.

Substitutions:

Substitutions are made at the quarter breaks only which includes half-time. If a player is injured, the coach may substitute for the injured player.

Injury:

Stop the game and have the coach come out and tend to the player.

Goal kick:

When a member of the attacking team (the team trying to score) last touches the ball and the ball crosses the goal line (and is not a goal), the defensive team restarts with a goal kick. The ball is placed anywhere in the goal area and all other players stand a reasonable distance away. A defensive player kicks the ball into play. The ball is in play when it leaves the goal area. The kicker can only kick the ball once until touched by someone else.

Corner kick:

When a member of the defensive team last touches the ball and it crosses the goal line (and is not a goal) the attacking team restarts with a corner kick. The ball is placed in the corner arc. Opponents must stand a reasonable distance away. The kicker can only kick the ball once until touched by someone else.

Fouls:

Anything that seems inappropriate – forearm pushing, kicking someone and not trying for the ball, pulling clothes, handling the ball (hand to the ball, not ball to the hand), pushing with the body, etc. The restart is an indirect free kick (IFK). IFK means that someone must touch the ball before a goal can be scored.

Player equipment:

Jersey, shorts, socks that completely cover shin guards, shoes that are safe, and shin guards that provide an adequate degree of protection. NO jewelry of any kind is allowed (including taped earrings). No hard hair pieces (including hair clips of any kind). No friendship bracelets.

Other information:

A dropped ball is used to restart play if play was stopped for an injury, for an inadvertent whistle, or for outside interference. There are no goalkeepers in U5/U6 games. Encourage all players to stay in the flow of the game. No scores are kept or recorded. A size 3 ball is used. Spectators are to be seated on the opposite side of players/coaches. Coaches must remain off the field during the game. Coaches act as referees and use the games as teaching opportunities for all the
