Game Regulations SIGNING IN: Prior to each game, all players must sign in with the Competitive Sports Staff. The game officials will then verify each player’s identity by checking the player’s ID at the playing site. All participants must display their valid University ID in order to participate. NO ID, NO PLAY! (NO EXCEPTIONS) An individual whose name appears on the official scoresheet will be considered as having played in the contest. Players who are not on the official scoresheet may sign in but will be required to join their team on IMLeagues before the end of the regular season to be eligible to play in playoffs. ELIGIBILITY: Participants must have a current membership with University of Dayton Campus Recreation in order to play. A participant may only play for one team. FORFEIT: Not ready for play at game time: The team ready for play shall receive the ball at the beginning of both halves. Every minute late after start: For every minute after game time a team is not ready to play, the opposing team will receive one point per minute. Ten (10) minutes late: Forfeit, recorded as 9-0, and the forfeiting team will receive a “D” for its sportsmanship rating PLAYERS: Maximum players = Seven (7) players Minimum players = Four (4) players *includes the goalie CAPTAINS: Each team must designate to the Referee the team captain. A flip of the coin decides which goal the winner will defend. GAME LENGTH: 4 Quarters of 5 minutes each with a three-minute half time. Clock will run continuously for the first half except official’s discretion. In the second half, the final two minutes the clock will stop for all dead ball situations (Out of bounds, goals and fouls). SHOT CLOCK: In the final 2:00 Min. of the 4th Quarter, there will be a 30 sec. shot clock in place, starting once the team establishes possession in their offensive half of the pool. If still in possession without an attempted shot after 30 sec. the opposing team will be granted possession of the ball.
TIME OUTS: Each team is awarded 1 timeout per half OVERTIME: There will be 3 minute golden goal periods until there is a winner. Each team will have 1 timeout for the whole duration of OT. PLAYING AREA: All matches will take place in the Pool of the RecPlex. MERCY RULE: If a team is winning by six (6) goals at the two minute mark of the second half or anytime after that, the game is over.
Equipment UNIFORMS: Proper Swimming attire must be worn (swim suits). Cotton is not permitted. Life Jackets are available upon request. Goggles are allowed. BALLS: The Intramural Department will provide a water polo ball. INNERTUBES: Innertubes will be provided.
Sport Specific Rules STARTING THE GAME: All players must start the game with a hand on the pool deck of their goal (defensive side). When the official drops the ball in the center of the pool, all players may advance. SUBSTITUTIONS: Substitutions can be made at any whistle. CARRYING THE BALL: The ball must be carried outside of the innertube, after a warning the result will be a turnover to the defense. (It may be carried in your feet, but not in your lap.) DEFENSE: The defenders objective is to stop the offense by stealing or swatting the ball or blocking/intercepting the pass or shot while in the Innertube. SITTING IN THE TUBE: All players must sit in the Innertube face up with the legs and arms extending out of the Innertube. GOAL: Goals will count as one (1) point if inside the half court line, two (2) points if thrown beyond half court line. To score a goal the following conditions must be met. A. The whole ball must completely enter the goal. B. A player must stay on the Innertube. If a player falls out of the tube due to motion of the shot the goal will be disallowed. C. The shot must be taken from outside the 2-yard line. (offside’s) After a goal is scored, the ball will be put in play by the goalie of the team that was scored upon after the official sounds the whistle. GOALKEEPER: The Goalkeeper must stay in the tube at all times. If the Goalkeeper falls out of the tube while handling the ball, a score is awarded. If the goalkeeper falls out of the tube after blocking a shot, NO goal is awarded. The Goalkeeper must pass the ball after eight (8) seconds outside of the goalie zone (2 yard line).
INBOUNDS AND OUT OF BOUNDS: A ball striking anything outside the pool causes the ball to become dead. The ball will be put in play by the opponent of the team that last touched the ball that was inbounds. A possession arrow will be used for dual possession or unclear possession situations. MISSED SHOT OUT OF BOUNDS: NO DEFENSIVE TOUCHING: Goalie Throw in. TOUCHED BY THE DEFENSE: The ball is put in play by the offensive team player at the 2-yard line on the sideline nearest to where the ball went out of play. THROW-IN: All balls that go out-of-bounds on the sideline are thrown in at the nearest point where the ball left play. The player has 5 seconds to throw the ball in to play. The ball must be touched by another player before attempting to score. The opponent must be 2 yards away until the ball is released. STALLING: A team must advance the ball in to the opponents side of the pool within 15 seconds of obtaining possession. If the team fails, each player of the offending team will have 5 seconds pass or shoot the ball during the current possession. A new count will start when each player obtains possession. OVER AND BACK: No player shall throw the ball to a teammate in their defensive half of the pool once they have established possession in the front half. A violation will result in the opposing team obtaining possession at mid-pool. PENALTY SHOTS: All fouls that result in a penalty shot will be taken from the 2 yards beyond the 2 yard goalie zone (4 total yards from the goal). Only the goalie and the shooter are involved, all other players must be within 5 feet of the sidelines. If missed the ball becomes live. If made, the ball is thrown in.
Rule Enforcement PENALTY SHOTS: GOALIE VIOLATIONS: the goalie may not cross the plane of the 2-yard goalie zone. The offended team shall be awarded a penalty shot. CONTACT/TACKLING/PUSHING/HOLDING: Contact with the opponent body or Innertube in attempt to dislodge the ball or impede progress from their possession. OUT OF THE TUBE- DEFENSE: No player shall attempt to play the ball while outside of the players Innertube. OPPONENT OBTAINS POSSESSION WHEN: DUNKING THE BALL: No player shall deliberately hold the ball under water. BALL PUNCHING: The act of dislodging the ball from opponents hand using a fist. SPLASHING: Intentionally splashing to disrupt vision or progress of an opponent. OFFSIDES: Offside is when a player crosses the 2 yard goalie zone on offense and/or defense. POOL WALLS: No touching of the pool walls with hands or feet. GOALIE THROW-IN: The goalie shall not pass the ball past the mid-pool point. OUT OF THE TUBE- OFFENSE: No player shall attempt to play the ball while outside of the players Innertube. FLAGRANT FOULS Any foul deemed to be flagrant will result in an ejection, a penalty shot and the shooting team will obtain possession.
