The guideline of points is as follows: 5- Excellent Conduct and Sportsmanship - Players cooperate fully with the officials and other team members. The captain calmly converses with officials about rule interpretations and calls. The captain also has full control of his/her teammates. Teams that win by forfeit will receive a “5.” 4- Good Conduct and Sportsmanship – Team members verbally complain about some decisions made by the officials and/ or show minor dissension, which may or may not merit a yellow card (soccer), unsportsmanlike flag (flag football), technical foul (basketball). Teams that receive 1 yellow card, unsportsmanlike flag or technical foul will receive no higher than a “4” rating. 3- Average Conduct and Sportsmanship – Team shows verbal dissent towards officials and/or the opposing team, which may or may not merit a yellow card, unsportsmanlike flag or technical foul. Captain exhibits minor control over his/her teammates, but is in control with himself/herself. Teams receiving multiple yellow cards, unsportsmanlike flags or technical fouls will receive no higher than a “3” rating. 2- Below Average Conduct and Sportsmanship – Teams constantly comment to the officials and/or the opposing team from the field and/or the sidelines. The team captain exhibits little or no control over teammates and/ or himself/herself. A team which receives one red card or ejection can receive no higher than a “2” rating. 1- Poor Conduct and Sportsmanship – Team is completely uncooperative. Captain has no control of teammates, and/ or himself/herself. A team which receives multiple ejections can receive no higher than a “1” rating. 0- Unacceptable Conduct and Sportsmanship --Individuals/teams participated after the consumption of alcohol or drugs. If the game has begun when discovered, the player or players will be immediately removed from the facility, and the game will be forfeited to the opponent. Participant(s) threatened (verbal or non-verbal) a Recreational Services employee or participant/spectator during or after the game. Team members failed to cooperate with Intramural Sports Program staff while performing their duties or falsely represented or withheld any information requested. Any team that receives an "Unacceptable Conduct and Sportsmanship" rating must have their captain meet with the Coordinator for Intramural Sports to determine their team’s eligibility to play their next game. During playoffs, Intramural Sports Staff will determine if a team advances to the next game. If there are any sportsmanship related problems in a game the Intramural Sports Assistant Director and/or Coordinator reserve the right to remove a team. All decisions will be made as soon as possible and are final. Further explanation of decisions will be by appointment from the team captain, but will not affect or change outcome of decision. Section Two. Rules A. The Court: Note the lines and service courts for singles and doubles. B. Definitions 1. "One Down" (doubles) - The first server is "down" or finished with his/her term of service and the second server on the same side now serves. 4. "Two Down” (doubles) - Both players on one side have finished their terms of services and the service goes to the other side of the net. Same as "Side out." 5. "Ace" - A point made in badminton is called an ace. Example: There are 15 aces in an intramural singles game. C. The side losing the toss shall then have choice of any alternative remaining. Ends are changed after games one and two. If a third game is necessary, ends are changed during the game after one side has scored 11 points in singles or doubles D. Scoring
Badminton Rules – Page 3
a) The match shall consist of the best 2 out of 3 games to 21. b) The singles game consists of the first one to score 21 points. If the score is 20-20, the first player to be ahead by two points wins. The score will continue like this until 29-29, and then the first person to score 30 points wins. c) A point is scored every time the shuttle cock is served. The side that scores the point will serve. In calling out the score, one should call the serving side's score first.
5.
Singles play: a) The players shall serve from and receive service in their respective right-hand service courts only when the servers score is "0," or when the server has scored an even number of points in the game. The service is delivered from and received in their respective left-hand service court when the server has scored an odd number of points.
6.
Doubles play: a) In doubles, when their score is an even number, partners should be in the courts (right or left service court) in which they began the game. When the team's score is an odd number, their court positions should be reversed. b) The side beginning a game has only one hand in its first inning. In all subsequent innings, each partner on each side has a hand, the partners serving consecutively. The side winning a game shall always serve first in the next game, but either of the winners may serve and either of the losers may receive. c) To begin the game, the player in the right hand service court of that side serves to the player in the service court diagonally opposite. When a point is scored by the serving team, then they change from one service court to the other and serve to the player diagonally opposite. No player may receive two consecutive serves in the same game. d) Serving examples • Player A from Team 1 serves from the right hand side of his/her court. If he/she wins the point, then Player A serves from the left side of his/her court ▪ Player A continues alternating sides until he/she loses the service, after which, Player B from Team 2 gets the serve. ▪ Whoever is on the right side of Team 2’s court when they obtain the serve, serves first. This person continues serving in the same fashion as the earlier servers (alternating left and right sides). This player, Player B, continues serving until he/she loses the service. ▪ After Player B is done serving, Player C from Team 2 begins their serve. ▪ After Player C loses the serve, Team 2 gives up the serve back to Team 1, where Player D begins to take his/her turn serving. ▪ After Player D ends their turn serving, the serve returns to Player A and the whole process repeats itself.\
7.
Faults: a) If in serving, the shuttlecock is struck above the server's waist. b) If at the serve, the shuttlecock falls into the wrong receiving courts. c) If the server's and receiver's feet are not within the boundaries of their serving court and receiving court, respectively. d) If the partner of the receiver takes the serve (doubles play). e) If a player touches the net with her/her racquet, person or clothes. f) If the shuttlecock is struck in return before it has crossed the net to his/her side. (The follow-through may break the plane of the net.)
