Undergraduate Interdisciplinary Topics, Centers & Institutes Bachelor of Science in Architecture Abstract ID# 593 Abstract This proposal for a housing development in Roxbury arose out of a need for affordable housing and community outreach programs in low-income neighborhoods. In Boston, there is a housing shortage that is resulting in skyrocketing rental prices and gentrification of previously low-income communities. Through a series of prototypical designs and site-specific studies, this project identifies a solution by way of an apartment complex for low-income families, which is made affordable through a modular system of construction. The architectural design also serves a need for an expansion of community outreach programs, and increased access to local fresh food, outdoor recreation, and public green spaces. This housing development will provide apartments to seventy six families while also providing community amenities such as childcare, restaurants, a bookstore, an outdoor stage, adequate parking and bike storage. The roofs on each of the buildings have dedicated green spaces for growing fresh produce and for semi-private recreational space. The overall site is designed to be porous which allows for ample pedestrian access, connecting these two blocks to the wider community. The site also caters to a park network that extends to the landscape of the buildings adjacent. This housing development will be a small step forward in addressing the larger Boston housing shortage and rising rental costs in an attempt to thwart gentrification and allow our community to thrive.

Introduction This project was generated from a design intensive semester studying housing and aggregration. The site is located on Washington Street across the street from parking Rosie’s Place (a women’s shelter) and down the street from several non profit organizations such as YouthBuild Boston prototype and community centers. The proposal studies low income housing with a strong focus on community engagement and interaction.
