The next night he scored the game-winning goal. • The win against Harvard was the first for Union at Messa Rink since the 2000-01 season. UCONN LOOKBACK Sophomore forward Stéphane Boileau fired a one-timer from the slot past Huskies goaltender Beau Erickson for the game-winning goal with 5:38 remaining in the second period of Union’s 3-2 victory against Connecticut on Oct. 31. • Boileau also set the stage for a thrilling finish by taking a penalty with 1:37 remaining in the game, but the Dutchmen stood strong and walked away with the win. CALL ME CHAMPION Third-period heroics by junior forward Mario Valery-Trabucco with 6:09 lifted the Dutchmen to a 4-2 victory against Colgate in the championship game of the 2008 Governor’s Cup on Oct. 25. • The title was the first for Union since 1993 and its first on U.S. soil. • The game-winner came after Colgate turned the puck over just outside of its defensive end and sophomore forward John Simpson sent a touch pass ahead to a streaking Valery-Trabucco. After receiving the pass, he fought off a Red Raider defender and sent a snap shot into the back of the net. SIMPSON HONORED BY JOURNAL Sophomore forward John Simpson was named New England Hockey Journal Player of the Week (for the weekend ending on Oct. 25) for his performance at the Governor’s Cup. • In Union’s win against Colgate he assisted on the team’s first goal and the third, which was the game-winner. • Simpson is tied for third in ECACH in goals and fifth in points. • He has registered two multiple point games. • At the Mutual of Omaha Stampede, Simpson scored three goals in two games. • Simpson scored a career-high two goals against the Bobcats and then scored his first career shorthanded goal against the Mavericks. NEVER ENOUGH TIME Union opened up the season with three consecutive overtime games for the first time in program history. • The Dutchmen have only played three straight OT games one other time -- near the end of the 2004-05 season.
REFLECTING ON RPI After Union and RPI skated to a 1-1 tie during the Oct. 24 game at the Governor’s Cup, the Dutchmen advanced winning the shootout, 2-0. • Freshman center Kelly Zajac scored Union’s lone goal during regulation, the first in his career, on a rebound on a senior Chris Potts shot. • Sophomore Stéphane Boileau and junior Mario Valery-Trabucco each scored in the shootout. RETURNING FROM OMAHA The Dutchmen jumped started their season at the 2008 Mutual of Omaha Stampede hosted by Nebraska-Omaha on Oct. 17-18. • Union opened with a 6-5 overtime victory against Quinnipiac in a non-league contest on Oct. 17. • Sophomore forward John Simpson, sophomore defenseman Brock Matheson and sophomore goaltender Cory Milan were selected to the all-tournament team. • For the third consecutive season, Union had opened the season with a victory. SHORTHANDED WORK Sophomore forward John Simpson scored a shorthanded goal at 6:38 of the first period against Nebraska-Omaha. • The shorthanded goal was Union’s first since T.J. Fox had one against Cornell on Feb. 9, 2007. PRESEASON RANKINGS The preseason rankings had the Dutchmen selected to finish fifth in ECACH by the coaches and sixth by the media. • These two rankings are the highest Union has ever been selected. • The Dutchmen were picked to finish 12th by both polls in 2007-08, but responded with a fourth-place finish and the team’s first ever first-round bye in the ECACH postseason. • This preseason, Union also received three votes in the USCHO.com poll. CAFFARO’S HONORED Senior defensemen Lane Caffaro became the first Dutchmen hockey student-athlete to be selected to the All-ECACH Preseason Team. • Caffaro earned the honor in both the coaches and media polls. • He played in 33 games last season and posted three goals and 13 assists and was an All-ECACH Third Team Selection. • Caffaro is 20th on Union’s all-time Division I scoring list with 61 points.
