THE MATCH-UP

With their win over Minnesota, Feb. 11, the Badgers clinched a share of the WCHA regular season title. Minutes after the UW-Minnesota game ended, Minnesota Duluth’s game vs. North Dakota became final. The Bulldogs’ upset loss gave the Badgers the outright title. It is the program’s first. In his fourth season as head coach, Mark Johnson has become the first women’s hockey head coach at UW to reach the 100-win milesone with a 100-27-10 record. The nation’s second-leading points scorer, junior Sara Bauer moved into sole possesion of third place on the UW’s all-time points list with 131 career points. The Badgers’ offense is led by junior Sara Bauer with 43 points in 28 games. Last season, the team was 15-3-0 when Bauer scored a goal and is 13-0-1 this season. The team is 191-1 when she has a point. On defense, Bobbi-Jo Slusar has 31 points, 23 coming from assists. Wisconsin is an undefeated 17-0 when she has an assist. The Badgers’ longest program winning streak (12 games) was snapped in their 2-1 loss to then-No. 4 UNH, Nov. 27. They were closing in on that number again with the current 13-game unbeaten streak (10 winning), but the loss to St. Cloud State, Feb. 4, snapped that streak and marked the first time the Badgers had been shut out this season. The Badgers completed the program’s longest road stand (13 games) Nov. 9 to Jan. 14 and went 11-1-1 in those games.

NOTEBOOK

NOT LONELY AT THE TOP For the first time in school history both the men’s and women’s hockey teams were ranked No. 1 in both hockey polls, Jan. 17. The only school to have both teams at the top was Minnesota, which did it four times during the 2004–05 season.

EARLY FAVORITES For the first time in school history the Wisconsin women’s hockey team debuted at No. 1 in the USCHO.com preseason standings. Released Oct. 3, the poll also pointed to St. Lawrence to share the top slot. In the USA Today/AHM poll Wisconsin came in one point behind SLU at second.

IN-STATE RECRUITS The 2005–06 Badger roster boasts eight skaters from Wisconsin—Rachel Bible (Black River Falls), Nikki Burish (Madison), Meghan Horras (Appleton), Cyndy Kenyon (Sparta), Heidi Kletzien (Manitowoc), Jessie Vetter (Cottage Grove), Kristen Witting (Beloit) and Jinelle Zaugg (Eagle River).

NATIONAL TEAM ROSTERS Juniors Bobbi-Jo Slusar, Meaghan Mikkelson and Sara Bauer earned spots on the Canadian Under-22 team and helped the team win the Air Canada Cup in Germany, Jan. 3-7. It was the third selection for Slusar and Mikkelson and Bauer’s debut.

HOLDING THE LINE

UW has allowed fewer than three goals in 102 of the 137 games under Mark Johnson.

DOUBLE THE FUN

 Ten Badgers have scored double figures in points (Bauer 43, Zaugg - 33, Cole - 33, Slusar - 31, Keseley - 26, Lawler - 23, Mikkelson - 22, Burish - 17, Kenyon - 17, Hanson - 15).

30+ SEASONS

Four Badgers have eclipsed the 30-point barrier this season. Bauer (43), Zaugg (33), Cole (33) and Slusar (31) have reached 30 points. It is the first 30+ season for Zaugg and Slusar, the second for Cole and third for Bauer. Only 13 Badgers have ever had 30+ seasons. Seven have had 40+ and three 50+. Meghan Hunter holds the record with 78 points in ther 2000-01 season.

INCOMING REPORT Wisconsin’s newest editions are earning their keep. Freshmen linemates Angie Keseley (St. Louis Park, Minn.), Erika Lawler (Fitchburg, Mass.) and Tia Hanson (Medicine Hat, Alberta) have combined for 74 points this season. Keseley leads the group with 9-15=24 followed by Lawler at 7-14=21 and Hanson at 7-8=15. Fellow forward, Kayla Hagen (Crosslake, Minn.) has five points (2-3=5 ). Defenders Alycia Matthews (Castlegar, British Columbia) and Rachel Bible (Black River Falls, Wis.) have seven and two points, respectively.

2006–07 COMMITMENTS

Wisconsin signed four student-athletes during the early signing period. Forwards Meghan Duggan (Danvers, Mass.), Emily Kranz (Waukesha, Wis.), Kyla Sanders (Parrish, Fla.) and goaltender Alannah McCready (Blaine, Minn.) will attend the University of Wisconsin beginning in the 2006–07 school year.

SCOUTING... MINNESOTA STATE Minnesota State fell twice at home to St. Cloud State in a series that had a huge effect on the league standings. The Huskies claimed a 1-0 win Friday, hanging on to a firstperiod goal, but rolled over the Mavs in a 6-1 win Saturday. With the WCHA losses, the Mavericks now occupy a share of sixth place in the league with Bemidji State. Recapping the weekend, the SCSU power play, the WCHA’s best, was held without a shot on goal in the first game. The Husky power-play broke through the Maverick defense the following afternoon, getting three goals on the advantage. Minnesota State avoided the series shutout when freshman Maggie Fisher stole the puck from a SCSU defender and raced solo to the net for her team’s only point of the weekend. Fisher leads the team with 15 goals and 21 points this season. Behind her are three sophomores and a freshman scoring in the teens: Kristina Bunker (87=15), Amanda Stohr (6-8=14), Noelle Needham (6-8=14) and Felicia Nelson (9-4=13). In goal, sophomore Britni Kehler has seen the most action, recording a 10-10-2 record. Junior Laura Brennan has a 1-61 record this season. The Badgers’ five seniors will be honored prior the Feb. 18 game vs. Minnesota State. Above: Sharon Cole, Grace Hutchins and Nikki Burish. At left: Meghan Horras and Cyndy Kenyon.

LAST TIME OUT BADGER OLYMPIANS

Wisconsin is represented on the American and Canadian Olympic teams with Molly Engstrom (Siren, Wis.) skating for Team USA and Carla MacLeod (Calgary, Alberta) with Canada. Engstrom made her debut in USA’s game vs. Germany after sitting out the first game with an injury. MacLeod has registered four points in two games and leads all Olympians, along with two of her teammates, with a plus-12 on-ice rating. NBC and its affliate stations (USA, CNBC, MSNBC) will be televising all the preliminary games as well as the semifinals, gold- and bronze-medal games. For a complete schedule visit nbcolympics.com. The No. 2 Wisconsin women’s hockey team clinched its first-ever regular season WCHA title following a 3-1 victory over Minnesota. The Gophers claimed the first game of the season with a 3-1 score. Saturday, an even first period ended scoreless with Wisconsin taking just two more shots than Minnesota, 11-9. The Badgers produced at 5:08 in the second on a powerplay drive. Senior captain Sharon Cole and points-leader Sara Bauer assisted on the goal by defender Bobbi-Jo Slusar. Bauer skated to the back of the net, and then flipped the puck to the bottom left circle where Slusar was in position to score finding the narrow space Gopher goalie Brittony Chartier left open under her right arm. With only 3:35 remaining on the clock in the second, Wisconsin scored the eventual game-winner after a deflected shot by Jinelle Zaugg was returned to her for a second opportunity. With Chartier out of position from the initial shot, Zaugg snuck the puck behind her left side.

The Gophers saved themselves from a shutout when they responded on the power play. Tricking Badger goalie Jessie Vetter, Bobbi Ross ignored chances on the right side and instead passed to Erica McKenzie on Vetter’s exposed left crease. The Badgers added insurance to their win at 8:46 in the final period. Slusar slammed the puck through traffic from the blue line and off a tip from Cole, a goal was scored. Rookie Badger goalie Vetter collected a 24 saves in the game, improving to 4-1-0. Despite marking a career-high 36 saves, freshman goalie Chartier added a seventh loss to her record. Friday, the Badger loss marked the first back-to-back losses for the team this season. Despite outshooting their opponent in the first period 13-10 and 9-3 in power play shots, the Badgers headed to the locker rooms down 0-1. Entering the second period, Wisconsin was persistent, but several breakaway opportunities, as well as effective pass plays, were futile, as the Badgers remained scoreless for the entire 20 minutes of play.

Minnesota’s strong offensive presence in Wisconsin’s zone proved to be successful, as the visiting team scored the eventual game-winner with 3:56 remaining on the second period clock. The goal came after Badger goalie, Meghan Horras, saved shots taken by Gopher skaters Erica McKenzie and Jenelle Philipczyk. The third time was the charm as Gigi Marvin picked up the second saved shot and tipped the puck in for the goal. The Badgers consistently beat Minnesota in face-offs, 3921, but winning the puck was not enough until the last minute of the game. Passes from Meghan Mikkelson and Nikki Burish led Wisconsin’s Cyndy Kenyon to a redirect of the puck over Minnesota goalie Kim Hanlon’s right skate for the Badgers only point of the game. UW’s six-skater surge came too late in the game, as on the next face-off, Minnesota’s Ross prevailed and pushed the puck down the ice and into the net, adding insurance to their victory with only 16 seconds left on the clock. Goaltenders Horras and Hanlon both ended the night with 25 saves. Hanlon improved to 8-2-0 in her first year playing collegiate hockey. In only her second loss of the season, Horras fell to 13-2-1.

* - not eligible for NCAA Tournament The USCHO.com Pairwise Ranking attempts to mimic the method used by the NCAA Selection Committee to determine participants for the NCAA Division I women's hockey tournament. The PWR compares only those with a Ratings Percentage Index (RPI) at or above .500, judging them by five criteria: record against common opponents, record in last 16 games, head to head competition, record against other teams at or above .500, and the RPI. For each comparison won, a team receives one point. The final PWR ranking is based on the number of points (comparisons) won against teams with RPI at or above .500. Ties are settled by the RPI. Clarkson, Rensselaer and Sacred Heart are not eligible for the NCAA D1 Tournament, but games with these teams count for tournament selection. The PWR can be reformatted and redistributed by any media outlet or person, provided USCHO's URL (http://www.uscho.com/) accompanies the results.

The Johnson Notebook...

Head Coach Mark Johnson Over his three seasons as Wisconsin’s head coach, Mark Johnson has established himself and Badger women’s hockey as pillars in the hockey community. Creating a program with a strong foundation and the markings for greatness, Johnson and the team are poised to finish what they had hoped to last season with the program’s first-ever NCAA tournament berth. In 2003 he was inducted to the National Shrine of American Hockey as a member of the 1980 U.S. Olympic hockey team. He was inducted again in 2004, for his individual accomplishments as a player and coach. Vince Lombardi Charitable Funds also honored Johnson’s volunteer work by presenting him with the 2004 ‘Award of Excellence’. He was also bestowed the NCAA Silver Anniversary Award in 2005. Named the 2003 WCHA Co-Coach of the Year and also one of eight finalists for the American Hockey Coaches Associated Division I Coach of the Year, Johnson guided Wisconsin to a 22-8-5 overall and 14-6-4 WCHA record that season.
