The NCAA held a vote in the month of February allowing Division I schools a chance to veto the new legislation that would allow schools to offer multiyear grants . The vote needed 63% of the institutions to veto the reform, while only 62% voted to veto it. The vote required 5/8 vote from Division I institutions, and 90% of the institutions voted. The new legislation has caused a rift between the different members of the NCAA. While the NCAA looks to further protect its student-athletes, many of the institutions that voted against the reform are afraid it will change the recruiting landscape and entitle the studentathletes too much. With only some schools having the ability to offer multi-year grants currently, it gives them a significant recruiting advantage compared to those schools that cannot. Many of these schools were caught off guard with the immediate implementation of this new legislation and are unable to offer these multi-year grants with their available funding. Outside of recruiting, the multiyear grants bind the school, and empowers the student athletes more. Prior to this legislation the belief was student-athletes work hard to receive their next scholarship. Now, many coaches and institutions are afraid that student-athletes won’t work as hard to get their scholarship renewed because they already have it guaranteed. The concerns of these institutions against the new multi-year grants are being considered, the push for these reforms continued for the overall goal of the betterment of the student-athlete. The multi-year grants look to protect student-athletes who routinely get one-year scholarships and are cut from teams without legitimate reasons. It attempts to offer the student-athletes a sense of security and protection. The reform also gives a recruiting edge to the smaller, mid-major, schools who can now compete with the major FBS schools down the road. In summary, the new multi-year legislation reform looks to change the landscape of collegiate athletics nationwide. Whether the reform will be good or bad, is still yet to be determined, but will continue to come under fire. There are many support groups for both sides working together to protect the schools and the student-athletes through this new legislation.
