Upper School art students recently got back from a whirlwind tour of the Big Apple, expanding on their classroom experience and exposing themselves to a broader world of art and culture. In the fall, interested students had to apply to go on the New York trip, demonstrating to Ms. Mulzer why they were interested in art and what makes them a good traveling companion. The trip was an astounding success and Senior Savannah Draud was eager to share her first-hand experience of what this opportunity provided. This year a select group of Junior and Senior art students took a 3-day weekend trip to the concrete jungle known as New York City. The trip was organized and chaperoned by the hardworking and talented Upper School Art teacher Ms. Mulzer, as well as Mrs. and Mr. Johnson. The trip got off to a shaky start when a plane went off the runway at LaGuardia, causing our early morning flight to be delayed until much later in the afternoon. We were bummed because we were supposed to see Wicked that night, but luckily, with the help of our trip advisors, we were still able to do all the amazing things we had planned. When we landed, we were met by our enthusiastic tour guide, Stefan, and he rushed us into a nice charter bus where we were swiftly--as swiftly as you can move in rush hour traffic in NYC-- to our hotel that was situated right off of Times Square. After dropping off our bags,

we walked through the chilly city streets to Rockefeller Center and took an exciting elevator trip to the “Top of the Rock” observation deck. Despite the freezing gusts of wind, everyone was having a great time staring at the bustling and bright city streets below. Once we had our fill of the beautiful views and taken numerous group photographs, we got our first taste of independence in the Big Apple. We split up into smaller groups and were each given $11 to find a place to eat near Times Square. My group decided to invest our money on a real New York pizza pie and we were not disappointed.

The next day we woke up bright and early to get ready for a busy day. Seeing as this was an art field trip, it is no surprise that one of the highlights of the trip was our visit to the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA). The MoMA was filled with everything from Van Gogh’s Starry Night, to drawings of stick figures on giant canvases. It was a very fun experience trying to interpret the meanings behind some of the more simplistic exhibits. As a joke, my friend, Augusta Eswine, and I left our socks on the floor in front of a white canvas and watched as people stood in front of them and tried to contemplate their meaning as if they were part of the exhibit. It was going pretty well until, a security guard noticed the confusion and picked them up.

We also took a trip to the 9-11 Memorial that same day and although it was very sad to see all the names carved into the marble, it was also very nice to see that they were being honored and remembered everyday. There were even white roses placed inside of the names of people who had birthdays that day. It was an excellent reminder of how thankful we should be for the people in our lives, as well as for our freedom. Later that night, we finally got to see Wicked! The show was absolutely amazing and we were all blown away by the incredible Broadway actor’s voices. After the show, we enjoyed a lovely Italian dinner at Buca di Beppo, complete with Parmesan chicken and unlimited amounts of pasta. On our final day in the city, we took a walk through Central Park on our way to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. We took a group picture in front of the John Lennon Imagine Memorial in the Strawberry Fields part of the park. Eventually we became too tempted to resist touching the snow and we got into a full-blown snowball fight, which our tour guide Stefan took as the perfect Instagram photo opportunity. Eventually we gave up on trying to peg our chaperones with snowballs and we made our way to the MET, where we saw all kinds of beautiful works of art from all different eras and cultures. After exploring the humongous museum for a while, we took a subway trip to Chinatown and Little Italy. Once there, we were given some free time to explore the area, get some good Chinese food, and possibly make a few bargains on cell phone cases, jewelry and Selfie

Sticks. After we had our fill of the bustling Chinatown streets, it was finally time to head back to the hotel to collect our bags and hop on the bus to the airport. Every last one of us either fell asleep or fought hard not to fall asleep on the flight home. We had been so busy walking around and taking in the sights that we didn’t realize how exhausted we had become. Although I can only truly speak for myself, I am sure that my fellow classmates would agree that this trip was well worth our money and time. There are so many people around the world who dream of coming to New York City for just one day and we got to spend a whole weekend walking among the bright lights and seeing world famous landmarks. I am very grateful for having been given this opportunity and I know I will remember it for many years to come.
