Knauf’s Latvian subsidiary was founded in 1994 to serve the Baltic region. Manufacturing takes place 24x7 at the subsidiary; therefore, unplanned downtime in the IT infrastructure is unacceptable. Knauf invested in virtualisation to minimise the risk of downtime and avoid interruption to manufacturing. Soon after VMware vSphere was implemented, the IT team thought it would be practical to backup its virtual machines (VMs) with the same tool it used to backup its physical machines. However, that tool didn’t integrate well with vSphere; it was slow and cumbersome. The team also hoped to use a native tool for monitoring the virtual environment, but it didn’t offer deep reporting capabilities. Knauf had several requirements for data protection and virtualisation management: high-speed backup, built-in deduplication, fast VM restore and comprehensive monitoring and reporting.
