Your cadence, or the rhythmic flow of a sequence of words, is also important to understand. Some of us speak very quickly. Our brains are thinking faster than our mouths can keep up. Others sound like we’re constantly reaching for the right word. The key is to find — and then practice — that sweet spot. Like Goldilocks and her portage, you need to strive for just the right cadence. Choose a well edited book (something like Rich Dad Poor Dad) and record yourself speaking it. Does it feel like your mouth is trying to keep up with your brain? Slow down. Just because you know what you’re going to say next doesn’t mean your audience does. Now that you understand the verbal part of communication let’s discuss receiving the message.
